We sit in your car

Sweaty, awkward teenagers

I make a cheesy comment

About the air freshener

"Those things never smell

Like pine trees.

Who are they kidding?"

Sun sets and time passes

Fake pine turns to gym socks

Loose change and homework

Cluttering back seats

French fries from McDonald's

Lining the floor beneath our feet

"Pick them up. That's gross."

You laugh, smile, insist,

"They add character."

Things change

Things stay the same

Through the stages

Through the ages

French fries remain

Awkwardness goes far, far away

We're left with a relationship

And a smelly old car
