Chapter 38

She was sitting by his side when his eye lashes started to flutter and his eyes swung open. She had been waiting for that moment for almost two weeks. Funny how time flew. Two weeks ago Lucas had been shot, and to her those weeks were all a blur.

"Hey," Lucas said in a sleepy voice. "Where am I?"

Ginger glanced down at him and smiled to herself. He'd woken up. "The hospital," she whispered while softly caressing his head.

"What am I doing in a hospital?" He tried to sit up but changed his mind upon pain shooting down his spine.

"You don't remember?"

He thought for a moment. Ginger looked into his dark eyes with all the love she had possessed and that seemed to had triggered his memory since his face changed as if remembering something painful. "I remember. Josie Kump shot me."

Ginger nodded sadly and tried to contain her tears. She had thought her heart would stop beating after that shooting, and the emotional pain was still there. To reassure herself that he was really alive, she took his hand into hers and pressed it to her face, to feel his skin on hers.

"Hey, it's okey," he said visibly sensing her sadness and fear.

"You have no idea how it feels," she said, and with all her strength she tried to stop her eyes from liquefying, but a few tears managed to slip out. "You have no idea how it feels to watch someone you love bleed to death."

"It's okey, we're okey," he said and tried to sit up but the pain was unbearable.

"When they took you to the hospital, they nearly lost you in the surgery. But apparently, as soon as you had gotten shot Bev had called Vana. She came and basically saved you."

Lucas smiled, or at least tried to but the pain got in the way. "Remind me to buy her a gift."

Ginger nodded and tightened her hold of his hand.

"How long have I been.... Um..."

"You're been in a coma for two weeks."

Lucas's eyes grew wide with surprise. "It doesn't feel longer then a day. What happened in this time? Did they arrest the Kumps?"

Ginger shook her head. "They arrested Josephine, but it seems that George Kump Sr ran away."

Another wave of surprise flew through Lucas's body. "He might come after you."

She nodded. "That's why the police department put under cover cops to protect me and everyone I'm connected to. They suspect that he'll attack one of us and they'll catch him."

Lucas nodded but didn't look reassured, and Ginger couldn't really blame him. She knew that he was worried about her, and she was worried about him.

"Did they figure out how Josie managed to get the gun into the courtroom?"

"No, they suspect that maybe George Kump Sr had a set of keys back from his judge days, and that he'd given then to her and she snuck in the middle of the night. But there's no proof."

Lucas nodded. "This is twisted isn't it? Who could have ever guessed that Joanna was actually alive, or that she was mentally insane." He fell silent, and so did she. After thinking of something, he said, "What surprises me is that when I talked to Victoria Progresson, she seemed to be insane out of her mind. But Joanna on the other hand showed no symptoms of any mental illness."

"The judge and the police did talk to a psychologist. According to him, Josephine Kump is fully sane, she's just overly creative. She thought up the whole entire situation. Apparently, she decided to pose as Victoria because that would help her in her insanity defense if she were to get caught. But a doctor says that someone has to be sane to come up with a scheme like that."

Lucas nodded. "And what about the Shovel Killer murder? Are they looking into it? Will I need a defense attorney?"

Ginger smiled. "Here's the good news. They dug up his bones where I told them to find him. After doing a dental record test, they identified that it's really him. They also took his DNA from his bone marrow and tested it against the DNA found on a few of his victims. And it matched. Then, they found traces of my blood on a little piece of fabric from my shirt. When we buried him, we didn't really notice that he had ripped a part of my shirt out and was holding it. With that piece of evidence, they ruled that you acted in self defense, and me defense." She paused and glanced into his eyes once again. "The only crime we've both committed was not coming forward with that information. So, I already had my trial and they ruled 20 community service hours. And as for you, they say you'll get less since you actually confessed."

Lucas nodded. "That's good."

Suddenly, Ginger blushed slightly and smiled to herself nervously. That was it, she realized, she had to tell him something important. Something that she had been putting off for a long time. "There's something else," she said. "After all this time, I want you to know that I've forgiven you."

There was no denying the happiness he expressed, and Ginger felt her whole entire heart dance with the feeling of love.

"When?" he asked.

"A while ago, actually." She leaned in closer to him. "I was just afraid to tell you because I didn't know how you'd react."

"But I thought you said that you'd only forgive me when pigs flew."

She laughed softly. "That's the thing. You're a cop, and cops are pigs, and when trying to save me you jumped and it looked like you were flying. So basically, a pig did fly."

Lucas laughed. "So are you saying that I'm a pig?"

"Yup," she said and laughed.

"You know that insults turn me on."

"That's weird you know. I mean, who the hell actually likes being insulted?"

"I don't actually, it's just that you look really hot when you're insulting people. You start acting like a spoiled little brat and that's kinda kinky."

Ginger smiled in a brat like way. "Oh really? Then who is insulting whom right now?"

"I don't know," he said tearingly. "Are you feeling turned on?"

"Very," she lowered her head and her voice.

"In that case, shut up and kiss me," he said.

And she did as told.

Their lips parted to invite each other in. As his tongue wagged against hers, she felt her heart flutter with the love she felt inside. With every lick, she knew he loved her. She didn't need to hear him say 'I lobe you' to know that it was true. The intimacy between them was unbreakable, the love undeniable, and their bond unchallengeable. She wrapped her hand around his head and slowly caressed his hair. He was hers, all hers, and she was never going to let him go.

The End

Dear Readers,

The first time I had ever started writing was in January of 2005, and that was when this story was started. Yup, this is my first story ever. I really enjoyed writing it, everything from the plot to the characters. I will miss writing about Ginger and Lucas, that's for sure.

I hope you all liked the story and the ending. She had finally forgiven him. I didn't want to end it with marriage or pregnancy because I don't think this couple is ready for that.

If you liked this story, please check out some of my other works since I have a few different stories going at this time. And, some of the characters from this story actually appear in my other works (like Constance, the attorney; Max Hart, the firefighter; and eventually even Vana, the doctor). And who knows, maybe I'll put Ginger and Lucas as guest characters in some of my other stories.

Thank you all for reading this.I hoped you all liked this story. Please review and let me know what you all thought.

XOXO,

Lija
