Digging Up Roberta

Dear Roberta,

You are my first diary thing I have ever had! I'm going to write in you every day that I can! You're going to be my best friend! Your name is Roberta. Roberta used to be my Barbie. We liked to eat s'ghetti-O's. I cut Roberta's hair, but I think she got broken, or her head died cuz it didn't grow back and then Roberta was bald. I really really liked playing with her on the swings and at the park and at school and in my room, but then she got lost and I think it was my doggy cause I saw him playing with her. Now I have a new Roberta!

Have you ever had a diary or kept a journal? In this story, a girl named Mandy confides the joys and sorrows of her youth in her new "best friend," a diary given to her by her mom for her eighth birthday. She confesses her joys, her sorrows, her anxieties, and her loves. Watch as she grows into a sensitive, loving young woman. Digging Up Roberta.

Dear Roberta,

Guess what?!? Guess what?!? I get a party today! I'm eight! Yeah! I'm gonna get Lucy and Mary and Susie and Anna and Maria and Lindsey and Kate and Pam and Eliza and Emily and Molly and Kim and Bobby! It's gonna be so much fun. Oooh, I can't wait! Mommy said I get to have a big cake! It's gonna be super hugomungous! It's gonna be a white cake with sprinkles inside and chocolate on the outside and candy and candles and things on the top! I get presents! I love presents. Presents are my most favoritest part of a birthday party. I hope I get lots! Sparky gets a big hugomungous hat, too! Sparky's my kitty. She's nice and soft and cuddly. Daddy got her for me last year. I'm so happy! I'm eight! Bye, bye! Love, Mandy

Dear Roberta,

It was my birthday yesterday. I turned nine. I got a fun Super Barbie Double Condo Swimming Pool FM Radio Dance Party Mansion Dreamhouse with a bonus Hooker Barbie outfit! It was super fun to play with. This morning Mommy looked sad and I asked her what was wrong, but she just said nothing was wrong so I must have just thought Mommy was sad when she really wasn't and maybe she just didn't get her coffee this morning or else we ran out of her favorite waffles cause I would be sad too if we ran out of waffles. I asked her when Daddy was coming back from his vacation, because I wanted him to see my super new Barbie Dreamhouse, but Mommy just said she didn't think he was coming home soon. Oh well. I'll just show him when he comes back home. I gotta go play Barbie's now! Bye, bye! From, Mandy

Dear Roberta,

I turned eleven today, and Jimmy said "Happy Birthday" to me! He's in my class and he is sooo cute! I wrote Jimmy Mandy 4ever on all my notebooks in my favorite glitter pen! I asked Lucy what to do to see if he likes me. We all got together and made a plan to find out. We're all gonna go get him alone and ask him. Well it's my eleventh birthday. I get to open presents after school. I saw this small one. I hope it's a Backstreet Boys CD! I love them! That Nick Carter is sooo cute! I wanna be in a band when I grow up. Ooops, I gotta go now. We gotta go find Jimmy. Bye! From, Mandy

Dear Roberta,

I just turned thirteen! I'm a teenager, finally. I got some sweet presents from my best friends, and some money from, like, other people. You know what totally freaked me out, though? My English teacher, Mr. Horgen, has the same birthday! It was really weird. He seemed to be in a very creepily preppy mood, and he didn't give, like, half of the class detention or something or whatever. Anyways, I got a saxophone from my crazy rich uncle from overseas. I'm gonna start talking lessons. I heard there were some really cute guys in band. My birthday was awesome. I am, like, happy or whatever. Well, I'll be back. Mr. Horgen's coming over to check if we are working. Bye! Mandy

Dear Roberta,

Oh my gosh, tomorrow's my fourteenth birthday. I got a present from Dad in the mail. It was a sweater from, like, France. He said his business trip was going great. I hope he's having fun in Paris. He has lots of business trips lately. I miss him. When Mom saw the present, she looked all sad again, and, like, angry. She should just tell him to stay home more. He could, like, cancel some business trips. I hope he comes home soon. Mom said I can have a birthday party on the weekend. I'm gonna go shopping! All my friends are coming, and we're, like, going to the mall! I sent out invitations yesterday. Oh my gosh! I'm finally an official high schooler! This is, like, awesome! See ya, Mandy

Dear Roberta,

Happy Birthday to me! I'm finally sixteen! I'm getting my license next week. I'm been saving up some money so I can buy a car. I saw a pretty good one. It's an older car, but I like it. It's black and runs well. It'll be nice to have my own ride.

I've been looking back at my past entries. I guess I haven't written much. You're rather beat up now, being eight years old and all. I still have most of those friends off that list. We've all grown up quite a bit, but that's to be expected. Hehe, I can't believe I ever liked Jimmy. He was popular back in grade school, but once we hit middle school, then high school, he had, shall we say, gone down the list quite a ways. Just like the Backstreet Boys. Hehe. I gave the CD and Barbie Dreamhouse to my younger cousin. She loves it.

Mom and Dad got divorced last year. I guess I always expected it somehow. After Dad kept staying away for longer and longer, I knew. I just didn't want to accept it. I guess that's what happened to Mom, too. I stay with her most of the time, but I get to go to Dad's place every other weekend and for about a month in the summer. I think they are happier now, and that's all I need. I still wish they hadn't separated, but it was the right choice. They were in love, but it just wore off.

Speaking of love, I think I have fallen in it. There's this guy, named Kurt. He's a junior and I'm a sophomore. He's really nice and funny, and he definitely doesn't break mirrors when he looks in them. I really like him, but so does Lucy. She's practically obsessed with him! I don't want to "take him away" from her or anything if she liked him first. Ah, the power of unknown love triangles.

Well, this is a pleasant entry. My life, contrary to what you may think now, is really quite good. I have a home, a family who loves me, if at a distance, good friends, a great school, and a lovely little notebook in which I can say what I need to say. Oh, yeah, I almost forgot. I was helping Mom plant flowers yesterday. I was just moving around dirt, and I dug up Roberta! Isn't that weird? Well, see you. Love, Mandy
