Chris was walking mindlessly next to Kat as she was blabbering about something. Chris couldn't stop thinking about what happened a few days before. He tried desperately to talk to Haylee but she refused to see or speak to him. He never felt this much pain as he was feeling now. He hated himself for not realizing it before. He just needed a second chance. 'God, I miss her!' He prayed as he kept walking. He didn't realize that Kat stopped a few steps behind him. He turned back to see her, arms crossed and a furious expression on her face.
"I'm sorry." Chris said shamelessly.
"Is there something wrong Chris? You've been doing that a lot lately."
Chris thought about her question.
"How can I answer that when nothing is right?" He said looking away from her.
"Is there something you want to tell me?" She asked curiously.
Chris stood there silently just thinking. 'Why am I still with her? I don't love her.'
"Yeah, actually there's something I have to tell you…" he said after a few minutes. "I think we need to take a break. I've got a lot to deal with and I don't need a girlfriend right now."
"What? Why? We were cool a few days ago."
"Something came up. I'm sorry." He said as he looked at her.
"Does this have to do with Haylee?" She grimaced.
Chris just looked away not wanting to answer her.
"Why doesn't your silence surprise me?" She said as she turned to walk away.
"Kat!" He said as she stopped in her place not looking back. "I'm really sorry." He said with all sincerity. She just nodded and walked off. Chris sighed heavily as he watched her go.
"Crap!" Chris said out of frustration as he threw his pen at the wall. He was trying to finish the song he started for Haylee, but he couldn't find the words to say. He looked around the room and his eyes landed on the picture of him and Haylee that was on his desk. He picked it up and stared at the picture, mainly Haylee, reminiscing the old times. He misses her so much. He doesn't know what to do. 'I need you Haylee.' He thought to himself as he caressed the picture in his hands.
At that moment he had an inspiration. He got the pen he threw at the wall and started to write.
Without you
I go through the motions
Without you
It's just not quite the same
Without you
I don't wanna go out
I just wanted to say
That I'm sick of these fights
I'll let you be right
If it stops you from running away
So just give me this chance
To make the wrongs right
To say
A few hours later, he finished the whole song with the lyrics and the music. He rushed over to Derryk's house, where band practice is usually held. He went to the garage and found everyone there, Derryk obviously, Jason, Lexa, Car, and Haylee. He couldn't help but feel a little left out. They were all laughing; they didn't realize he was in the room. He stared at Haylee for awhile; she was smiling, sitting next to Car. 'She's happy, that's all that matters, even when I'm not the one to make her smile.'
All of a sudden he felt subconscious, he felt shy. He didn't want them to see him so he turned around to leave but stopped when he heard his name.
"Chris!" Jason yelled.
Chris soon felt regret rush over him, he should of left when he had the chance. He timidly turned toward the group. Everybody was looking at him. Haylee had an expression of shock mixed with sympathy.
"Hey." Chris said looking down at his feet.
"What's up dude?" Derryk said. "Come over here! What are you doing over there?"
"I just came by to let you know, um…" He said a little hesitant. "That I finished a song and I wanted to hear it out."
"Oh really? That's cool man!" Derryk said. "Let me see it!"
Chris handed him the papers.
"Promise! Nice title!" Derryk said as Jason was reading over his shoulder.
Haylee instantly had the urge to leave. She some how knew that the song was about her and she didn't want to hear it. She was scared that if she did listen to it, she would be right where she started from and feel all the pain.
She got up as the boys and Lexa were looking through the song.
"Well, I guess I'll be going then." She said as she was heading for the door.
"Don't leave on my account." Chris said.
"I'm sorry, but not everything is about you." She spat at him. At the moment she was very heated. She couldn't stand his arrogance.
'What's up with men and their cockiness?' She thought to herself.
She was a few steps from her car until an arm grabbed her.
"Haylee!" It was Chris.
"What do you want Chris?" She said not facing him.
"Can we talk?"
"No!" She said as she continued walking to her car but was held back.
"Why don't you just talk to me? I said I was sorry! What else do you want me to do?" He asked in frustration.
Haylee stood there with no reaction or response.
"Haylee, I…" He started to say. He was a little hesitant on his choice of words. "I miss you." He finally said. With that he sighed and walked back to the garage.
Haylee just stood there motionless, contemplating on what to do. The garage door started to open, but Haylee didn't realize until she heard the band playing a song.
"This is for you Haylee." Chris said as Haylee turned around to meet his gaze.
Breakdown
I can't take this
I need somewhere to go
I need you
I'm so restless
I don't know what to do
'Cause we've had our rough times
Been fighting all night
And now we're just slipping away
So you'll give me this chance
To make the wrongs right, to say:
Don't, don't, don't walk away
I promise
Chris sang as he put his hand up as if taking an oath.
I won't let you down (you down)
If you take my hand tonight
I promise
We'll be just fine
This time
If you take my hand tonight
If you take my hand tonight
Without you
I go through the motions
Without you
It's just not quite the same
Without you
I don't wanna go out
I just wanted to say
That I'm sick of these fights
I'll let you be right
If it stops you from running away
So just give me this chance
To make the wrongs right
To say
Don't, don't, don't walk away
I promise
I won't let you down (you down)
If you take my hand tonight
I promise
We'll be just fine
This time
If you take my hand tonight
Take my hand
Take my hand (I promise)
Take my hand (I promise)
Take my hand
GO!
I promise
I won't let you down (you down)
If you take my hand tonight
I promise
We'll be just fine
This time
If you take my hand tonight
If you take my hand tonight
I won't let you down
So take my hand tonight
When the song was over, Chris extended his hand out to Haylee. Haylee by then was already in tears. She stared at Chris with her red eyes, thinking of what to do. She was filled with so much mixed emotions; she didn't know what to do. She just stood there staring at him. Chris took a step closer to her, but she just shook her head furiously, ran to her car and sped off. Chris watched her till he couldn't watch her no more. He took in a deep breath. Derryk went to stand behind him.
He patted Chris's back, "She'll come around."
Chris just nodded his head, still staring out at the direction from where she left.
"Come on dude, we have to practice for our audition." Jason said.
The next day it was the day, the day of the audition.
"Today is the day fellas!" Jason said excitedly. Lexa cleared her throat. "Oh and Lexa!"
Everyone was hyped, except for Chris. He was emotionally numb. He couldn't feel for anything anymore. All he could think about is Haylee. He desperately wanted everything to go back to normal, to be happy again. He didn't care about anything else but Haylee, not even the audition.
Chris was sitting on one of their amps, waiting patiently for their audition.
"Are you guys ready?" Some guy asked.
"Heck yes!" Jason said.
"Well alright then, set up over there. The big boss is coming down soon." The guy said, leaving the band to set up.
"Man! How stoked are you to be here right now? This could be our big break!" Derryk said.
Chris just smiled at him, while he was setting up his mic. The band was too caught up fixing up their equipment; they didn't know the founder of Lava records arrived.
"All right guys impress me!"
Meanwhile Haylee was in her room staring at the letter Chris left for her before he went to the audition.
Dear Haylee,
I know you hate me right now and you don't want to talk to me, that's fine! I wouldn't want to talk to myself either. Anyway, the reason why I'm writing you this letter is to tell you that I'm truly sorry. I know you've heard me say it a billion times, but I really mean it. I never meant to hurt you, in anyway. I wish we could've worked everything out. I'm so sad that it has to end this way. Well, I'll be heading out of town tonight, no matter how the audition goes. Nothing really matters to me anymore without you there. And I can't stand to see you with someone else; when I know we could have had something great. I love you Hayls! Don't ever question that. I guess this would be goodbye. Take care of you're self.
Love,
Chris
She read over the letter a few more times. She was contemplating on what to do. She desperately wanted to forgive him and stop him from going, but her pride got in the way. She wanted everything to go back to the way it was, but she knew it would never be the same.
"I can't believe that didn't go right!" Jason furiously said. "It was our freakin' chance and we blew it! We blew it!"
"Yeah! I know! I thought we did good." Car said.
"Good? You think we did fuckin' good?" Chris said getting heated from everything that has been going on. "This is all your fault!"
"Hey! This is no one's fault Chris." Derryk said.
"Whoa! My fault? What the heck did I do?" Car asked shockingly.
"He said we weren't original. You're the asshole who told us to do a fuckin' cover! I told you we should do one of our own songs." Chris said as a matter of factly.
"Whatever bitch! You just blame because I have Haylee."
"What the heck does Haylee have to do with anything? And you don't have her! This has nothing to do with her. This is about you and how you messed everything up. The moment you came through the garage, I know you weren't any good!" Chris said standing up to him.
"Whoa guys! Cool it!" Lexa said getting between them.
"Shut up! You're just mad because she doesn't follow you around and worship the ground you walk on anymore. She's all mine now."
"Fuck You! I don't need this shit! I'm getting out of this fuckin' town." Chris said ready to walk out.
"What are you talking about Chris?" Jason asked.
"You heard me, I'm leaving Long Beach. I can't stand this shit no more. There's nothing left for me. Haylee's gone and our band went down the drain." Chris said dejectedly.
"So you're just going to leave us just like that? That's it?" Derryk said.
Chris just stared at him, he couldn't answer. He sighed deeply and looked to the floor.
"Guys, don't even worry about him! He can be replaced. Go ahead! Leave! That's what you're good at." Car said, his voice dripping with anger.
"Man! Fuck You!" Chris said as he punched Car square on his face. Car fell to the ground covering the spot where Chris left his mark. "Don't you ever talk to me like that! You don't know shit about me!" Chris said threateningly and walked away.
Haylee was sitting on her couch, staring at the turned-off TV, just thinking, until there was a knock on the door. She took her time answering it because she didn't want to anything. All she wanted to do is be alone. When she opened the door, she saw Car with a black eye.
"Oh my gosh Car! What happened?" She asked as she caressed the skin around his eye.
"That's not important right now, Haylee. You have to go get Chris." He said.
"What are you talking about?" She asked confused.
"He's leaving town tonight!"
"Yeah, I know." She whispered.
"Aren't you going to do anything about it?"
"Why should I?"
"Don't be so stubborn Haylee!" He said truthfully. "Yeah it was messed up what he did, I agree. But he loves you back! Wasn't that what you always wanted? Now that you know for sure the man of your dreams thinks of you in the same way, you're just going to let him go?"
Haylee just stared at him in disbelief. "Why are you doing this?" She asked.
"Because he's miserable! So miserable that he has to leave. It sucks! I feel bad for him. And plus I might have been a little vindictive towards him. That's how I got this." He said as he pointed to the black eye.
"What should I do?" Haylee asked.
"Go get him!" Car yelled, thinking it was the most obvious thing to do.
Haylee smiled for the first time in a long while. She got her car keys and hugged Car before she left. When she was in her car, she was thinking of where he would be. First she drove to his house. When she got there, his parents told her that he had left just five minutes ago to the Greyhound (bus station). It wasn't that far away from his house. She drove as fast as she could.
"Please still be there! Oh God, please let him still be there!" She said to herself.
When she got there, she jumped out of her car to look for him. There were so many people, she couldn't really see because they were all so tall. She tried her best to look for him.
"Chris!" She screamed out, hoping that he would somehow hear her. "Chris!"
She was starting to lose hope when people were starting to leave. She looked in most of the buses to see if he was already boarded, but no luck. She couldn't find him anywhere. She started to worry when everyone had boarded on the buses and she was the only one left.
'Oh my gosh! What have I done? If I only talked to him, he wouldn't have left.' She thought to herself. She started to tear as she walked back to her car. She drove in silence back to her apartment. By now her tears turned into silent cries. She couldn't believe he was gone.
She slowly walked up the stairs to her apartment. As she was near her door, she couldn't believe what she saw. Chris was sitting down in front of her door. His head was down resting on his arms. She didn't know what to do but just stand there and stare at him. She grew a little happier just at the sight of him. Her heart was beating faster and faster.
Chris felt someone was there so he looked. When he saw Haylee, he jumped to his feet.
"Haylee—" He started to say.
"I thought you left." Haylee said with a straight face. She wanted to have her fun with him first. He looked hurt at what she just said.
"Well, I was going to but then I wanted to say bye to you." He said staring at her intently, Haylee staring at him with same intensity. Her insides smiled, knowing the outcome of this. She didn't know if she could keep this act up. She just wanted to jump on him.
"Well, I guess this would be goodbye." He said as he put his hands in his pockets, staring at the floor. 'Ok that's enough.' She thought. She walked up to him and lifted his chin with her finger. She gazed into his eyes, trying to read him. She could see disbelief written all over. She started to close the space between them and soon she covered his lips with hers. At first, Chris was too shocked to react. It took him a few seconds to respond, after realizing what was going on. He grabbed her by the waist, bring her as close as he possibly could. Haylee wrapped her arms around his neck, making the kiss more intense and passionate.
When they finally broke apart, they both stared at each other. You could see the hint of happiness in Chris's eyes.
"I love you." Chris said as he leaned his forehead on to hers.
"I love you too." Haylee replied.
