villanelle: A 19-line poem of fixed form consisting of five tercets and a final quatrain on two rhymes, with the first and third lines of the first tercet repeated alternately as a refrain closing the succeeding stanzas and joined as the final couplet of the )

We're doing these in poetry class: they're kind of fun! Basically, the first and third lines of the first stanza are repeated alternately, all middle lines have to rhyme, all other lines have to rhyme, and there has to be a specific number of beats. This one has 4, though some of it all depends on how you count it.

Sail far away on waters blue
Contrasting beneath a fiery sky
Eternally drenched in crimson hue.

Lightning split and then tore through
My heart. All I could do was cry,
"Sail far away on waters blue."

I earnestly wished it was not true
But with new secrets hurt was I
Eternally drenched in crimson hue.

On wings of gossamer my soul flew
My hopes my dreams, all for I espy,
Sail far away on waters blue.

The sun now sets the world anew
And soaked is everything, far and nigh
Eternally drenched in crimson hue.

The time is right, I flee from you
Laughing with hope, maliciously I
Sail far away through waters blue
Eternally drenched in crimson hue.
