Prologue

The only thing we have to fear...

Detective Flynn has always hated this part of his job. He looked upon the crime scene ahead of him. Police cars surrounding the campus, the familiar yellow tape strewn carelessly along the bushes.

"Detective, glad to see you came to this part of the woods," Officer Mulkin, a rookie cop, came over and shook his hand admirably.

"Crime seems to follow me wherever I go, it looks like," he ran a hand through his salt and pepper hair, "what happened?"

Mulkin nervously opened his note pad. "Hm, 18 year old woman was attacked while walking back to her dorm room around midnight. No witnesses, but a campus security guard heard the noise and came over in the nick of time. Attempted rape and she seems pretty shaken up about it." He snapped his notepad shut.

Flynn raised his eyebrows at the young man. "I would be shaken up too. Where is she?"

"That's not what I meant, sir, she says she knows the attacker," At this, the veteran detective raised his eyebrows questioningly, "she's sitting in the back of the ambulance."

"Thank you, officer," He patted him on the back and quickly strode over to the woman.

He found her sitting in the back of the ambulance looking out into the distance. "Miss? Hello, my name is Detective Flynn; I'm a detective with the Special Victims Unit. May I sit down?" He asked with great kindness.

"Go ahead." The woman answered. She looked just about around her age, with raven black hair and startling hazel eyes.

"Crappy night, huh?" He laughed and looked around at the dreary and murky weather. When he saw that she didn't crack a smile, he continued. "Do you mind telling me what happened? I want to help you."

She looked at him through the corner of her eye, but remained quiet.

He laughed a humorless laugh, "Well, I guess I could ask you what your name is first."

She held her head miserably in her hands, and mumbled, "Randi."

He looked at her for a long moment. "What happened tonight, Randi?"

She raised her head slowly from her hands, her eyes brimming with tears. "Don't you know?" She whispered.

He leaned forward slowly, his eyes blazing, the crime scene behind them seeming to disappear with each second. "Know what?"

Randi raised her hair from the back of her neck, exposing her flesh.

Suddenly, he knew. He knew all too well.

is fear itself

A/N: Hey everyone, new story as you can probably see. Um, I know it's pretty short, but the first chapter is always a beyatch to write. Anyways, I hope you like it!
