A/N: Another school assignment, a sonnet this time. Let me know what you think.

The Difference Between Man and Beast

My child, before you call yourself ruler

Over the creatures that slither and crawl through mud,

You must ask, What's the difference between man and beast?

Can either of the two say that their life is the fuller?

The eagle is not content to stay at the nest.

She soars over foreign lands, to the east and the west.

The lowly tortoise leaves its young to the sand.

Alone, they seek life or death at water's hand.

Man hates, he murders, he loves, he creates beauty.

Man is altogether more civilized

And more bestial than any species on earth.

Does this mean that he has more worth?

We look for the difference between man and beast.

Does such a defining distinction even exist?
