Loran crashed into her flat and went straight to her stove to make tea. After living in England for four years she had grown to love tea. It was an oddly cold day for the middle of June and Loran was wearing a long sleeve T-shirt and jeans with black boots. Loran hadn't been alone for more than five minutes when Kennedy, Loran's roommate and best friend since birth, came crashing into the flat in a wave of dramatics. Loran watched as Kennedy twirled holding her arms close and practically flew onto the couch. By the look in her eyes Loran could tell Kennedy had exciting news.
"You will never believe what just happened," Kennedy told her.
"Try me," Loran smiled.
"Okay I was at Henry's," Kennedy said referring to their hang out spot, the pub down the street. "And this man came in and started talking to me. I thought he was just trying to flirt with me and I wasn't paying him to much mind but of course I was being nice. Then he was talking about how he had seen me in that play I did a few weeks ago and thought I was really good. Oh! He was American, like us, I forgot to tell you about that." If anyone but Loran had been listening to Kennedy they would not have understood a word of that but Loran knew Kennedy better than anyone else in the world and visa versa. "Right so we were talking about the play I did and I found out he's a producer in LA. Isn't that incredible. And even more incredible he offered me a part in his next movie."
Loran knew Kennedy was a smart girl but she also knew she wasn't street smart. After hearing the story Loran figured the man Kennedy had been talking to was some guy who was just prying on Kennedy because she was pretty and easy to take advantage of.
"And I know you're going to ask me how I do know he's a real producer?" Kennedy said in her Loran impression. "Because he showed me his card and he works for Universal Studios and I can call them and confirm that he's real."
Loran was impressed by how much information Kennedy had gotten but was still wary for her best friend. She asked more about the guy and then encouraged her to call the studio. Kennedy's dream was to be an actress and she was incredible too. Loran was attending Oxford University studying English and Kennedy had come with her to England because they had never been apart for more than a month.
"I'm going to call him right now," Kennedy announced walking into her room. Loran sighed wondering how disappointed Kennedy would be this time. It had happen to her before, men saying they were producers or agents to see if she would fall for it. Loran grabbed Pride and Prejudice and continued from where she had left off. Over the summer Loran had to read three books from a list of 50 and write an analysis of each book.
About twenty minutes later Kennedy emerged from the bedroom looking opposite from what Loran had imagined she would look like. Instead of having the devastated look on her face, she looked elated. Once again Kennedy twirled and flew onto the couch.
"Yes?" Loran asked.
"It's a real movie," Kennedy said. "Like a real movie with like a real budget that is actually expected to make money."
"That's great!" Loran said excited for her best friend wondering how big the movie actually was going to be. Kennedy was known for exaggerating.
"And they want me to come audition in two weeks," Kennedy said her face changing to concern.
"And where's the audition?" Loran asked.
"LA," Kennedy answered. Loran was a little worried now.
"And where's the movie being filmed?" Loran asked wondering if that was going to be in LA too.
"LA," Kennedy answered. "I'd have to move back to California." Loran and Kennedy had grew up in Bel Air, California but after high school something happened that made Loran want to be as far away from California has possible. Kennedy had come with her even though that meant becoming a famous actress would get that much harder.
"Well then in two weeks we'll fly out to LA," Loran answered. Because Kennedy had made the move with her Loran always promised herself if Kennedy had somehow managed to get a part in a movie she would go back to LA. But Loran had never expected to come so soon, if at all.
"And if I get the part?" Kennedy asked knowing how much her best friend loved England and how many bad memories were in LA.
"We'll deal with that when it comes," Loran answered. Kennedy smiled and hugged her best friend. Loran was the rational one, the one with all the answers, the one who always knew what to do in a problem. Kennedy was not. Kennedy was over-dramatic and made problems worse by exaggerating them. After Kennedy skipped back into her room Loran picked her book back up. Not really reading, Loran started at the pages.
What happens if Kennedy did get the part?
Then we move to LA. Loran thought answering her questions.
Do I want to move back to LA?
No of course not. But you have to for Kennedy. She moved halfway across the world for you.
Mom will be elated when she finds out. Great.
Loran's thoughts swirled in her head. She couldn't think anymore and finally drifted into sleep where memories came back to her dreams.
