The moon shone down through the trees, creating silver lace patterns on the ground. The tress were full of green leaves, and hid well the girl who rode swiftly through the forest. Her red hair was tied up in a bun, and she wore a burgundy dress trimmed with gold. It made her look like the princess she was. It was Nicole of Greenhaven, first born of the King and Queen. She was to be married off to the new King of Craven, a country northern of hers. He was nice enough in court, but when he was alone with her his true personality shone through. He was vile man with quick words and the tongue of a serpent.
Not only that, but Nicole was already in love.
The clever knight Damien had captured her heart. His eyes were piercing, and he was a smooth talker with a kind soul. He loved her and had shown that every time he had caught her in the halls with a smile or a few words. But it couldn't be. She was already betrothed, and her father considered her marriage as a gift for an alliance. He couldn't break a promise. Nicole ran to escape the marriage and having to choose someone she hated over her true love.
Now, as Nicole reached the end of the forest and entered the meadow that she considered the last point before there was no turning back, she knew she would be forever heartbroken. As she sild off her black mare, a tear slid down her cheek. Her pale skin glowed in the crystalline moonlight, making her have an unearthly beauty. Nicole took a deep breath and tried to stifle her tears.
Arms slid around her waist and enfolded her in an embrace. Nicole felt someone behind her bury their head into her hair.
"Damien, why are you here?" Nicole said choking over her words.
"I should be asking you that, not the other way around." Damien replied.
"I can't stand hurting you. You know I can't marry him. My father will never let me out of it, he would never let me marry you. You are the one I love. But–"
"But what?" Damien interrupted. "Are you afraid for me? From your parent's wrath?"
"You will be hung if our love is discovered. I cannot bear that. No longer can my heart bear this either; I must leave." Nicole said, more tears falling.
Damien turned her around to face him and stared into her jeweled eyes. "But don't you see?" Damien whispered. "I would never let that happen. I love you... And I always will."
At this Nicole broke down, pulling him close. She laid her head on his chest and closed her eyes. "I can't let you..." Nicole whispered.
"I'm willing to sacrifice my honor as a knight and my loyalty to your father for you. You are my only one. My little fox."
"I know, and I love you, Damien. I do. But no one will back us here. We must leave. But where?"
"Where ever the wind takes us, my love."
Nicole smiled. "You always know what to say to me." She looked up. Damien leaned over and kissed her lightly on the lips. He paused before deepening it. When she pulled away, the were both smiling.
"We better move. You father will send out troops." Damien said, and Nicole nodded. Damien gave her a lift onto her mare before mounting his own grey gelding. They set out silently into the night, riding as close together as possible.
