The Robot Senshi Battles. I've always wanted to participate in one of them. My whole life I've watched friends of mine enter their robots and fight for the title of Grand Senshi. Hi-hi! My name is Nozomi Hayashibara. I'm a fifth grader and a great inventor! I live in the city of Tokyo, Japan with my adopted family. We all live in peace with no wars, no plagues, and the only thing you need to worry about is not catching a cold!
Episode 1: The name, Protocol!
"Nozomi! Come on wake up!"
"Ugh..." A girl sat up in her bed. "Ow!" She then rubbed her head, banging it on the shelf above her. She then looked at the bottom of the shelf and read what was written. "Nozomi you idiot! Remember not to bang your head on the wall! Signed, Nozomi...I feel like such an idiot." She sighed.
I'm not like the average ten year old. My parents died a long time ago and when I mean long, I mean I can't even remember them! So I live with a foster family. They were so kind to me that my foster father and his son built a workshop with a bed in it for me to stay! It's like my own mini house minus a kitchen!
The ten year old slid off her bed and left it in a mess. To her, geniuses can make all the messes they wished, that is until their parents tell them when to clean up. She made her way to a closet and pulled it open. Looking around, she pulled out denim overalls with a picture of a daisy in the middle, and a red shirt. Dressing in them, Nozomi fell to the floor in the heap while she tried to put on the overalls.
As you may see, I'm not that graceful. My foster mother has this...weird idea that girls should wear dresses, giggle and sew. I don't know why she talks like that. That idea is just plain ridiculous! Preposterous! Totally against my nature.
"Today's the big day Nozomi-chan! The day we get the rest of the money for your robot! Your very first robot!"
"That's right!" Nozomi's eyes widened as she got up. "I gotta go! I gotta go!" She grasped the door handle, slipped on her sandals and ran out the door.
The young man you just heard is my older foster brother. His name is Rai and he's definitely one of the coolest sixteen year olds ever! In fact, he's the only cool one. Rai helps me out with my inventions and had given me a lot of support towards the robot I plan on building. He went so far that half his paycheck from his restaurant work went to my funding.
Nozomi smiled broadly as she looked up at a blond, pony-tailed, blue-eyed boy. He was dressed in a black muscle shirt and blue jeans "I'm ready when you are!" she announced.
He's the coolest!
"And let's hope the work isn't too hard!"
The blue and black armored robot you see here is Dragoon. He can be cocky and sarcastic sometimes but he's the one who gave me all the info I needed on how to build my robot. He has blue eyes and his most recognizable mark is the armor he wears. When Rai built Dragoon, he shaped his armor into craftily shaped scales. It's really cool! And the weapon he uses in the Robot Senshi Battles is a spear. He's like a flying dragon!
Dragoon stood beside Rai and he had his arms folded across his chest.
The Robots can vary in sizes. The cute thing about the Battle Senshi is that they can change into small doll-like versions of themselves. All you need to do in order to change them to their regular size (that's about a meter and a half or my size of you must) is to use an item of choice, insert it into the robot and click, start!
"Let's hope so," Nozomi answered with a nod.
"This…is hard!" Nozomi looked over to Rai who was across the roof cleaning out his own part of the gutters. "Not to mention my…small…fear…of heights! The things I would do! Oh the things I would do for a companion of my own!"
Rai looked over to her and grinned. "Remember, you have Dragoon by your side right now. You won't fall and," he winked to her. "When your robot finds out all you did to build him or her, they're going to be very happy."
"I suppose I can look at it that way…Yeah, thanks Rai-Wah Wah!" Nozomi had been talking to Rai and not paying attention to how she was leaning. She started to fall off the roof but was quickly rescued by Dragoon.
"Less chat more work little one!" he told her with a cheerful tune to his voice. "The only robot friend I have to hang out with is Nauticaa and she isn't much fun y'know."
Nauticaa is another Robot that I know. More on her later!
Nozomi nodded. "Right. I'm sorry Dragoon-sensei!"
The Robot sighed and placed the girl back on the roof. "Didn't I say enough of the sensei? I mean Nozomi! Come on!"
Rai laughed as he wiped his forehead of sweat. "She respects you a lot Dragoon. Don't you find that invigorating?"
"Not at all." Dragoon shook his head and again caught Nozomi's arm. "Hey I said less chat!"
"I wasn't chatting!" Nozomi protested as she was lowered onto the roof again.
"Then I guess we have to work on your daydreaming…Look I know Rai in a muscle shirt may be irresistible but this is crazy!"
Nozomi blushed fiercely. "That is so not true!"
"Hahaha!" Nozomi waved an envelope through the air. "5,000 yen was all we needed. Who knew gutter cleaning, lawn mowing and pet grooming can profit this much!"
"Stop waving that around it's getting mighty annoying." Dragoon muttered to her left.
Rai looked down to Dragoon as they walked to the shop, Tsunami. "Cool down or I'll shut you down for today." He warned him. "She's just excited."
"A little too excited. But, hey I don't want to be shut down." He then poked Nozomi with his elbow. "Buy the best parts and build my soon-to-be best buddy okay?"
Nozomi nodded and brushed a piece of brown hair from her eyes. "All right, leave it to me! The genius inventor!"
Dragoon and Rai watched as Nozomi made her way into the shop. "She's not going to do well, is she?" Dragoon asked Rai.
Rai sweat-dropped and shook his head. "I don't exactly think so…"
"Hello hello!" Nozomi grinned to the store clerk. "I'd like to buy parts for a robot please! A standard gun blade model with the shield included! How much will it cost?"
The clerk, a man in his fifties dressed in a white shirt, red tie, blue pants and wearing what was left of his balding hair in a ponytail, looked down at her. "That'll cost about 50,000 yen." He answered. "How much do you have?"
"Uh…" Nozomi's eyes had widened and she dug out her wallet. "Wah Wah!" she cried. "Sorry sir, I only have 30,000 yen. Is there anything I can get that's cheaper?"
"Nope! No such thing! Be gone with you!" The clerk waved towards the door.
"But Mister!" Nozomi protested. "Please there's got to be something cheaper! You don't know what I've been through!" Tears started to stream down her cheeks. "I've been through so many things! Dog grooming! Gutter cleaning! Pet walking! I even faced my fear of heights! There's got to be something!"
The clerk frowned still. "All right. I hate to see a kid cry. Give me one second. This may not work." Nozomi watched the clerk turn and leave into the other room. He returned shortly and showed Nozomi a disk. "This is a very old OS system disk. It may not work but it's yours free. Got it? Not a word to anyone that I'm getting soft."
"Wah Wah! Thanks mister!" Nozomi grinned and twirled in circles, looking at her precious disk. "You're the best! To imagine in the future you can say 'I gave that Robot Senshi Champion her OS system disk!"
Nozomi ran out the door with her package and tripped on a crack in the ground. The package flew out of her hands and into the arms of Dragoon. "You need to be more careful." he remarked. "I'd hate to see a robot in your hands."
Nozomi growled and raised her hand and slapped Dragoon in the face. She then jumped back and held her hand that was red. "Darn, I forgot you robots have hard heads!"
"You bet we do!" Dragoon answered her with a laugh.
Rai smiled. "So you had enough?"
Nozomi opened her mouth to speak of the deal then decided not to. "Yep, come on let's go!"
"His name...I don't know what his name is going to be."
Nozomi fitted the head of the robot onto the body while Rai worked on connecting the OS system disk to the robot. "How about, Burnstrike?"
"Too...overconfident..."
Rai started up the computer. "How about...Mudroller?"
"Too...dirty..."
"How about...offline?"
"Offline what kind of name is that?" Nozomi looked over to Rai with raised eyebrows.
"I mean, the OS system disk doesn't seem to want to work. Did you get it from elsewhere Nozomi?" he asked her with a frown. "We're talking a lot of money being lost here."
Nozomi shrugged while trying to keep a straight face. "I don't know...I don't know...Rai. It's getting late and I'd like to go to sleep...can I?"
Rai nodded. "You had a hard day. I'll be back first thing in the morning."
Nozomi sat on her bed and watched Rai leave with the silent Dragoon on his shoulder in Doll Form. "A broken OS system disk huh..." she said to herself. "Why can't things ever work out for me? Ever?"
But you wouldn't believe what had happened that night. That night, my life had changed forever. And to think it was all because of the broken OS system disk. C'est la vie?
Nozomi's slept quietly in the dark. After hearing a thud, her eyes widened as she saw a person clothed in black escape out her window with a box. She slipped on her sandals and, wearing nothing but a white t-shirt and blue sweat pants went outside to investigate.
"Hello?" she called with an anxious look on her face. "Come back! Whoever you are comeback, huh?" Nozomi felt something run along her neck and reached up to feel a chain. "Hey, that's my..." she then felt a small key. "That's my key charm! I took it off before I started work today, actually, I didn't even wear it today!"
Nozomi went back to check the time on her clock through her window. "Three am. Who's awake at three am.! Wait..." She didn't have time to notice before but now she knew what was in the box. "My robot...they stole my robot. But why? He's a piece of junk...But...He's my piece of junk and no one else's!" Nozomi shook her head and started to run in the direction the thief went in.
Yeah. That robot of mine was stolen. Who would want a robot like that anyway? Some pretty interesting folk...
Too slow, she thought to herself as she looked around. I'm running too slow! Nozomi followed the man out into a field of a schoolyard. He then turned to face her. "Uh oh," she said to herself.
A helicopter appeared from behind the school. From the helicopter dropped a box. Crashing, the box revealed a robot that was not hers. This one had dark red eyes and was colored dark blue. In its hand was a sword. Nozami gulped.
The man attached the box to a rope hung down from the helicopter and then climbed up himself. "That's my robot!" Nozomi yelled and ran towards the box. Leaping up onto it, she kicked at the box while the man aimed a gun down at her. She screamed as she heard the shot and ducked. The bullet pierced through the rope and Nozomi dropped down onto the ground. The box revealed a different robot than the one Nozomi had before. It was had a blue chest plate and was mostly white in color except for yellow elbow shoulder pads.
Nozomi looked at her key and the key shaped hole in the chest plate. Another bullet whizzed past her and the robot nearby was looking towards her as if it had mission objectives that included her. "Anything's worth a try!" she said to herself with a grim face and inserted her key into the hole and turned it.
Click
And that's what started it all...
Nozomi stumbled and fell to the ground as her robot began to move. It's eyes glowed a serene blue as it looked down to her. "Hello?" she asked weakly. "Don't kill me!"
"A Homo Sapien." he stated with a tone of understanding. Nozomi was reminded of an innocent child when she heard his voice. "Why would I kill a Homo Sapien? Miss, are you all right?"
Nozomi shook her head. "I'm about to be freaking killed by that robot over there!" she pointed at the other robot that was walking in slow but large steps toward them. "Do something! You're a robot too!"
The robot then looked up in time to see the other robot launch an attack. He grabbed his shield from his back and pushed Nozomi behind him. Using the shield, the robot stood his ground and bounced the blast away from him and toward the helicopter which soon flew away.
"That's what I'm talking about! Yeah fly away!" she yelled at the retreating helicopter. "This robot is mine! I built him!"
"Built?" The robot looked back to Nozomi.
"Never mind that. Can you take him on?" she asked nervously, holding onto the robot's arm in a tight grip.
"That blast was strong, I was barely able to bounce it off my shield." he answered her and stumbled back, bouncing another blast off. Nozomi fell backwards and stared in horror as part of her school was destroyed by the blast.
"We're going to be killed!" she cried out.
"I've heard no such word before." The robot reassured Nozami. "Forgive me for pulling you into this. I may have no such memory of why this robot, Battox as my sensors read him as, is attacking us. Jump on my back."
Nozomi jumped up onto the robot's back without any hesitation. She wanted out of there fast! The robot carried her over to the school and tried to open a window. "Oh come on! You've got power! Crash it!" Nozomi cried out in disbelief to the robot's sensitivity.
"But that would damage the building." he protested.
Nozomi sighed and looked back, seeing the approaching Battox. "Just smash it open! The school's already damaged!" The robot nodded in reply and punched the window. Carefully, he picked Nozomi up and placed her inside.
"Hide somewhere and stay there until I come back." he instructed her. Nozomi watched as the robot turned and pulled out his own gun and started to walk back to the battlefield.
"If he gets killed out there, it's my fault." Nozomi said to herself and wiped several tears away. "Don't get killed out there!" she cried out after him.
The robot looked at Battox. "I ask for you to please, lower your weapons!" he shouted at the robot.
"Over my dead body!" Battox shouted back. "That girl has seen too much. She needs to be killed!" the robot then added in a lower voice. "You have the OS system we need and had invented. You are ours."
"But I was built by the girl. She had said so herself!" The robot protested in confusion.
"That body is nothing but a useless shell with no power whatsoever!" Battox raised his hand and folded it into a fist. "The power you want is with the Organization. You know the one I'm talking about."
"The Organization? What is this Organizations plans? Motivations?"
Battox laughed loudly. "Only to prove ourselves better than the Homo Sapiens!"
Nozomi peeked up from the window. "That guy's bad news..." she said to herself. "I hope the robot I built can handle him."
"I can't allow you to harm the girl." The robot pointed his gun at Battox.
"And I can't let you stand in...my...way!" Battox took his own gun out and shot at the robot. The shot was bounced away again and the robot countered the shot with one of his own. Nothing came out of the pistol he carried though.
Nozomi slapped her forehead. "Of course I'd forget to pack him with some ammunition! Robot! Use the sword!"
The robot threw the gun to the ground and drew his sword. Pressing the ignition button, a green light emerged and grew into the length of a broadsword. With his sword in his right hand and his shield in his left hand, the robot charged Battox. Battox countered with another shot. This one veered off to the left and barely scrapped the robot's shield. Nozomi's eyes widened as the blast came towards her. She screamed and ducked under a desk as debris flew all around her.
The robot looked towards the school then back at Battox who was preparing another shot. "Die!" Battox yelled and fired another shot. The robot jumped into the path of the beamshot and braced himself.
Nozomi peered out the window again. "Come on!" she yelled seeing the robot struggling with the blast. "You can do it! I believe in you! Think of it as baseball robot! Take one wild swing and hit it out of the park!"
Something flashed in the robot's eyes. Nozomi looked down at her necklace with the key charm on it. The key had started to glow a golden yellow colour. The robot had started to see things in slow motion and with his eyes focused on the beamshot, he pulled his sword back and then swung it at the shot.
The feeling...
The shot flew at Battox that stood stunned at what he had witnessed. The shot consumed the robot and his parts were scattered around the courtyard.
It was weird...like...burning hot energy...And just like that...We had won our first unofficial battle. And we didn't even know each other's names!
Nozomi climbed out of the window and ran towards the robot. "Oh man! You were so awesome! It was just like..." Nozomi grabbed hold of an imaginary sword and swung it. "WHAM! Gone just like that! It was so great and...uh...?"
The robot was on his knees exhausted from the sudden burst of energy. "Sorry..." Nozomi apologized and bowed. "Should've known you'd be tired. They all are tired when they do stuff like that on television...So, you have no name?"
He shook his head. "I have no designated name. Nor do I have a designated owner."
"I might not be your owner, you seem pretty independent. But I can give you a name! Let's see...You're very polite and organized, you say big words and go by the rules in the book. That's what I think you are. So..."
Nozomi nodded to herself after thinking of the name. "Your name will be Protocol."
"Protocol?" He looked up at Nozomi. "I like the name but what does it mean?"
"Protocol...Because you're so orderly. And...It also means to follow an agenda which you seem to do. Protocol, my name is Nozomi. I built the body for you but I didn't create the OS system disk you have. And I guess the clerk at the store didn't build it..." she kneeled down and placed a hand on Protocol's shoulder. "We're stuck together now. Let's make the best of it."
Protocol nodded as Nozomi smiled. "Maybe perhaps with your help, I may regain my memory." He gazed at the sunrise and nodded again. 'Maybe' he thought.
Maybe we'll find out what's going on?
A/N: I guess I need an explanation for why I'm not updating my other stories and coming out with a new one. I guess you can say my muses are telling me to do this or they'll kill my creativity! WAH!!! But I felt as if I need to write something kid-like and here it is! This was created out of my mourning for Medabots and my obsession for SD Gundam. Yeah I know Protocol sounds a lot like Captain but c'est la vie...Nozomi is kind of like my female version of Shute. But before anyone gets any idea that Nozomi is my avatar, no she is not. I am totally cool with heights. There is another character that will be. You'll see soon. Anyways, r/r please!
