How To Take Over The World: Chapter 1.

It was the first day of college. The freshmen felt this mixture of anxiety and excitement that all the students had always felt and will always feel for their college beginnings. One of them, though, felt more assured than the others. Ethan Garth belonged to a family of powerful wizards, so why should he be afraid of some economics courses? Okay, that wasn't a very good reason, because magic had nothing to do with economics. Then, what made him more confident than his fellow students? Well, maybe it was that he was the son of Alexander Garth, owner of the biggest food group in San Francisco and the fourth biggest in the United States. So he knew that a very well-paid job waited for him after he got his degree. And graduating shouldn't be that hard if his stupid older brother and sister had done it!

Ethan was calmly talking with a group of other students when he saw another youth enter the classroom. He was very handsome, he had shoulder-long dark hair and piercing blue eyes. However, what attracted Ethan's attention was not what he saw, but what he felt. As a wizard, he could recognize a demon at once, even though there was no chance a normal human could see through such a powerful spell. The demon looked in the room, but pretended not to notice him. Of course, Ethan knew better than that. Even though some wizards weren't able to recognize demons, all the demons had the power to spot wizards. But this demon went to sit down on the opposite side of the classroom and began chatting with a few students. And what the Hell was a demon doing in his college anyway? Ethan wondered if he should go and talk to him, but he considered it wasn't the right time for that, with all the humans being able to hear their conversation. Besides, their marketing teacher chose this moment to enter the room.

After the classes, Ethan caught sight of the demon walking away by himself and ran up to him.

"Hey, you! Hi! I'm Ethan Garth."

The youth looked at Ethan with surprise. After a few seconds, he finally recognized the guy with short brown hair and green eyes who had just called him.

"Oh, we're in the same class. Hi! I'm Andy Reynolds."

"So, why didn't you come to talk to me before?"

Andy looked astonished. "What are you talking about? I don't think we've already met before. Except in the classroom, of course. So why should I have gone and talked to you in particular?"

"Oh, come on, you know what I'm talking about."

"No, not at all, but I guess that you're going to tell me."

"Well, I don't know what game you're playing, demon, but I can tell you that it's a waste of time!"

"So now you're calling me a demon!" Andy answered angrily.

Ethan looked exasperated: "Of course! Stop hiding it! It's obvious that I know you're a demon as it's obvious that you know I'm a wizard."

Andy rolled his eyes: "Okay, you should really stop playing video games and start seeing a shrink. You seem to suffer from confusion between reality and fiction."

"Ha ha! Very funny! Why don't you want to... Wait a minute! You don't work for Satan? Are you on Abaddon's side? Is that why you're here under cover? Well, then, you've failed, because let me tell you something: we're not gonna let you do whatever you're supposed to do here. San Francisco is ours and we won't let Abaddon have it!"

Andy pointed at Ethan: "You freak! Listen to this: LEAVE ME ALONE! This is a college here, and most of us attend it in order to study, so if you want to be delusional, fine, but do it alone!"

Then, he left as fast as he could. Ethan wondered if he should follow him, but decided not to. After all, he was only a wizard, so it wouldn't be very careful to aggravate a demon, especially if said demon were part of Abaddon's gang like he suspected it.

Ethan headed for the flat he shared with his two best friends, William Johnson and Julian Maxwell. Of course, their parents were paying the rent, but the three teenagers were happy about their new-found independence. Actually, wizards tended to give more freedom to their children than average humans, but it wasn't the same when you still lived with your parents. Ethan opened the door and entered the sitting room. A teenager with blond hair and green eyes was flopped on the couch, watching an action movie.

"Hi, Julian! Is Will here? I think we've got a problem."

"A problem? What kind of problem? Will must be reading in his room. WILL!"

"WHAT?" Indeed, the answer came from one of the bedrooms.

"COME HERE, PLEASE!"

A Black guy entered the living room: "I'm trying to study here! What is it?"

"You'll study later," Ethan answered. "We've got a more important problem."

"So, will you tell us now, or do we have to torture you?" Julian commented.

"There's a demon in my class. He's used a spell to turn himself into a human."

"What?" Julian exclaimed. "But why the Hell would a demon want to study economics?"

"That's a very good question. But stop interrupting me. Well, after classes, I talked to him and he pretended he didn't know what I was talking about. And I had never seen him before anyway. If he worked for Satan, we would at least have heard of him and of whatever he might be doing here. I suspect he's on Abaddon's side."

"Oh, and the first thing you do is go and talk to him. That's so clever!" Will remarked.

"Well, that's not like he wasn't going to notice I'm a wizard."

"Maybe, but that wasn't very cautious."

"Okay, but at first, I thought he was one of us. Abaddon's demons are not supposed to walk free in San Francisco streets.

"What are we going to do?" Julian asked.

"So none of you have heard of anything. That's what I thought. Well, I'm going to phone home and see if Dad knows something about it. And if he doesn't, he'll take care of the problem anyway."

Ethan dialled his parents' number and turned on the loud-speaker so that Julian and Will could follow the conversation.

"Hello!" a girl answered.

"Hi, Lydia! Is Dad here?"

"Oh, Ethan, it's you. How are you? I miss you, Bro."

"I'm fine. I'm happy to talk to you too. Don't worry, I'll come to see you this weekend. But I need to talk to Dad now, it's important."

"He hasn't come back from work yet."

"Oh, yes, you're right. Is Mum here?"

"Yes, she is. MUM! IT'S ETHAN. HE SAYS IT'S IMPORTANT."

"Stop screaming like that, young lady. It doesn't suit you," Ethan heard his mother say. "Good afternoon, Ethan. Is everything all right?"

"Good afternoon, Mum. Don't worry, I'm fine. But something weird happened today. There's a demon in my college. Have you heard of him? Is he one of us or does he work for Abaddon? I tried to talk to him, but he pretended he didn't understand what I was saying."

"Oh, that's really annoying. I haven't heard of anything like that, so it's likely that he doesn't work for Satan. What did he look like? I guess that he hasn't told you his name."

"Of course not! Only the human name that he must have given to the college. It was Andy something. What was it already? I can't remember. Oh yes, Reynolds, Andy Reynolds."

There was a silence, followed by an "Oooh!"

"What, Mum? Do you know him?"

"Well, stop worrying. He doesn't work for Abaddon, as long as I know. And if he is who I think he is, he has no idea whatsoever who you are. I think he must be Zadina's son."

"Zadina's son?" Ethan exclaimed.

"What?" Julian seconded.

"Now, that explains a few things," Will added.

Katherine resumed her explanation: "When she decided to live among the humans, she took the name of Anita Lowfield."

"Yes, my father created her false ID. At the time, it was a bit easier and quicker than now," Will confirmed.

"You're right, William," Katherine continued. "Then, she moved to a small town, because she wanted to live like normal humans for some time, instead of spending her time with wizards and demons in San Francisco. I think she went to Calistoga. Originally, she didn't plan to stay for long, but then, she fell in love with a human, Peter Reynolds if I remember correctly. She married him and got pregnant. I don't know what happened to her afterwards, but I guess she still lives there."

"So she let her son come and study at San Francisco without telling him anything about his origins or the fact that there are several wizard families here in San Francisco. How weird is that?" Ethan commented.

"I guess she thinks we are going to leave him alone. But she could have mentioned his arrival. Or maybe she wants him to find out the truth by himself. Anyway, I think she should have told him about his origins, but that is only my opinion," his mother answered.

"We'll see how things evolve. Thanks for the information, Mum. You had already told me about Zadina a long time ago, but I sure didn't remember her human name, and since we usually don't talk about her, I would never have thought that this guy could have been her son. Good bye, Mum!"

"Good bye!"

"At least, we know who he is. But what are you going to do now?" Will asked.

"I don't know. I don't think I should tell him, not for now at least. He already thinks I'm crazy, I'm not going to make my case worse. But there's one thing I'm going to do," Ethan answered.

"Which one?" Julian asked with curiosity.

"I'm going to hit on him, because this guy is hot as Hell!"

"Wow! You hadn't mentioned that before," Julian remarked.

"I must say that the fact I thought he was a demon, and a demon working for Abaddon at that, was quite a turn-off! But now I know he's half-human, and potentially on our side, since his mother was or is or whatever, this is a far better prospect."

"Except he's been raised among humans, so he must be totally straight," Will pointed out.

Julian whined. "I would never understand why humans can't be bisexual like everybody else. That must be so boring!"

"Well, if he's straight, let's see if I can open his horizons," Ethan replied, smiling like the evil wizard he was.

To Be Continued.

The Out-Takes: Chapter 1.

"At least, we know who he is. But what are you going to do now?" Will asked.

"Nothing at all. We know he's not an enemy, so I'm going to do what he said, and I quote: "LEAVE ME ALONE!" Anyway, why would I want to spend time with a half-demon who's been raised among humans? He must be boring as Hell!" Ethan answered.

The End. Full Stop.

"What? Wait a minute! You can't end the story like that," Daimot exclaimed.

"Why not? And what are you doing here anyway? You didn't even appear in the story," Ethan remarked.

"That's my point! You can't end the story before I am in it."

"Is this your most convincing argument?"

Daimot hesitated, then said: "Didn't you find Andy hot?"

"Yes, of course."

"Don't you want to go out with him?"

"Well, that could be great."

"So what are you waiting for? Go hit on him!"

"Okay, you're right, we're not going to stop the story here. Let's do this again!"
