Conditioned Happiness

You can waste you life denying that happiness exists,

Grasping your troubles in order to bring you down,

But then I ask you, how do you know sadness if there is not happiness?

Surely all sadness will be seen as the sweetest of situations should it have no contrast.

Should the sweetest flower be destroyed, would not the next take its place as the sweetest?

The smile of an angel replaced with tears of a clown,

A flutter of wings becomes only a breeze,

Tears may become a godsend and starvation become a normality,

But this still would not eliminate happiness,

Sweet would not taste nearly so sweet had you never tasted the sour,

As sour would not be considered without means of contrast.

Conditioned happiness may be all we have,

But there is no sadness without it.
