Judgments

You look at me,
And ask if I'm related
To so and so, perhaps.
And so you think
I'm just like them.
I'm not just her sister!
I'm not just their son!
You can't expect these things from me
When I could have been
Anyone.

Who I am
Is not who my family is.

You look at me,
And see my skin
And my face.
And so you think
I'm just like them.
I'm not just black!
I'm not just Caucasian!
You can't expect these things from me
When I could have been
Anyone.

Who I am
Is not where I'm from.

You look at my grades
Some are good,
Some are bad.
And so you think
I'm just like them.
I'm not good at everything!
Maybe I'm not dumb!
You can't expect these things from me
When I could have been
Anyone.

Who I am
Is not what my grades are.

You look at me
And see my make-up
Or my clothes.
And so you think
I'm just like them.
I'm not just a dumb prep!
I'm not just geek who has no fun!
You can't expect these things from me
When I could have been
Anyone.

Who I am
Is not how I look.

You look at me
And see a kid
Who's just a kid.
And so you think
You know who I am.

You don't.

I am not my family
I am not my country.
I am not my grades.
I am not my clothes.

We
Are people.
Don't treat us
Like things.
