Ch.9-Die another Day.

It was dark out again. The black sky hovered over me like a thick blanket. Rain clouds bumped together ready to spill their contents. I looked at everyone through my rear view mirror. They were asleep. After the incident Kay was so shaken up she curled up next to Luke. He had his arm around her and he slep peacefully against the window. Leo and Ember sat in the second row. Leo was leaning up against his window and Ember was curled up next to him. His arm around her shoulder. Dawn was sleeping with her head on Ember's lap. I then looked over at Carter. His head was on a blanket that was propped against his window. It bumped up and down lightly as I hit the rough parts of the road. I smiled slightly and turned back to the road. One hand was resting on the wheel and the other on the arm rest between us. I leaned my head back and sighed. Clouds passed the moon over and over again. I was so tired but I couldn't sleep. It was still country road up ahead. I didn't know how long it would take to get to another city. Right now, we were just winging it. I felt a hand grasp onto mine. I looked over at Carter who's green eyes locked with mine. He smiled slightly.

"You need sleep." He whispered.

"So do you." I smiled.

"But I've gotten sleep. You havent slept since we were at the apartment." He reminded me.

"Oh don't remind me. I wouldn't be able to sleep anyways." I said running a hand through my tousled hair.

"Stop the car." he sat up a little more.

"What? Why?" I asked confused.

"Just stop the car." He kept on.

I sighed and slowly eased on the brake slowing it down. It finally came to a stop in the middle of the street. Everyone slowly woke up curious as to why we stopped.

"Hey Luke. You've been asleep the longest. Why don't you take over driving for a while?" Carter asked.

"Sure man. But where are we going?" he asked.

"Just go back to sleep im fine." I argued.

"I really have to agree here Tay. You're tired and look like hell." Leo yawned from behind me.

"Thanks." I said bluntly.

"Just get atleast some sleep. Please. For me?" Leo begged from behind me. He gave me his puppy dog look. He knew I was a sucker for that look.

"Don't give me that look!" I whined. But he kept on.

I sighed angrily and unstrapped myself. I opened up the door and Carter followed my lead. When I opened up the back door, I saw Luke and Kay had climbed up through the two seats to the front. Carter and I climbed over the 2 seat to the back seat. I rest rapped myself in and leaned my head back. I closed my eyes but was soon awakened by tugging on my arm. I looked over at Carter who was leaning against his blanket and window again. I leaned over as he wrapped his arms around me. I grabbed the blanket that Luke and Kay had been using and threw it over onto me. I finally closed my eyes again. I felt the car as it slowly began to pick up speed again. Soon I drifted off to sleep.

The road was cold beneath my bare feet. A gust of wind blew my hair off to one side. I hugged myself tighter. It was empty. Everywhere was empty. I had seen no one. I was alone. The empty buildings I passed as I walked along made me shiver out of fear. Not knowing what will pop out of them. The grey sky above me turned darker. A shuffle behind me. I turned around fast to face nothing. I started to panic a little more. I turned back and started to walk faster. The noise started again but I ignored it and walked faster. It became louder and I bolted into a sprint. It only followed.

I finally turned around and yelled "What do you want from me!"

Nothing

There was nobody there. Just my imagination running wild on me. My guilty conscience catching up to me. I failed them. Everyone of them. Dawn, Ember, Leo, Kay, Luke,…Carter. I failed all of them and now I'm alone. Alone and being followed. I know I'll be dead soon. I can't live through this alone. I'm weak. I'm scared. And for the first time in my life…I feel hopeless. There are those footsteps again. I turn around instantly this time. Nothing there.

"Just take me already! Please! Please take me from this hell hole! Don't let me suffer. Please." I shrank to the ground. On my knees, I buried my face into my hands and cried. "please." I whispered.

I heard the shuffling again. This time it was in front of me. I looked up. A little girl in a white summer dress looked down at me. Her beautiful brown locks fell around her as she held a teddy bear in her tiny arm. Her grayish eyes held nothing but sorrow. She couldn't have been any older than six. She just stared at me. I sat up straighter. She held a pale hand out to me. I hesitantly looked at it. Then up at her grey eyes. I got lost in them for a minute. I then slowly reached out my hand and lightly touched the tips of her cold fingers.

I was awakened by the abrupt stop of the car sending me forward. My eyes flew open as I was briefly choked on my seat belt. I heard a flow of curse words and someone hitting the steering wheel. I sat up and rubbed the sleep away from my eyes. My vision blurred but soon focused on everyone around me.

"Is everyone okay?" I heard Leo ask. Eveyone grunted in response. I felt a hand on my shoulder.

"Are you okay?" Cater asked looking into my eyes.

"Yeah. I'm fine. What the hell happened?" I asked rubbing my throat.

"I hit someone." Luke announced. His head was on the steering wheel.

"And you didn't see if they were okay?!" I yelled back at him.

"No! they could be one of them!" he yelled back.

"Well now they could! Ugh!" I yelled frustrated. I got my knife out and put it in my back poket.

"I'll go.' Leo said holding me back.

"But…" he cut me off.

"You always check things out. Let me do it." I reluctantly handed over my knife and he got out and rounded the car. I leaned over the seat and slapped Luke up side the head.

"You should be out there." I chided.

He rubbed the back of his head and glared at me. Serves him right. I turned my attention to Leo. Who stood staring at the body. I could hear him calling out to the person. They didn't respond. I became worried and called him back to the car. After a final call he gave up and came around to the side of the car. That is, until that thing got up and decided to come after him.

"Get in the car!" Ember yelled at him. He turned around and stared at the thing staggering towards him.

"What are you doing? Get in the car Leo!" I yelled. He was frozen. He didn't move at all. I then took this chance to jump over the seat and grabbed him pulling him in. I shut the door and yelled for Luke to drive.

I looked down at him. He still looked dazed. "Die another day." I told him. He smiled a ghostly smile.

"What?" I asked him. He was laying in my lap still.

"That was my cousin. Lena." His smile disappeared.

Luke freaked out. "Oh my god dude im so sorry. I didn't mean…" He stuttered.

"She's been dead for two years." He cut off Luke. I remember that day. So did Ember, but I remember it so vividly. That's when he started all the drugs and smoking. Lena was his favorite cousin. After she died. He felt lost. He didn't cry at the funeral, but he did when it was just us at his house. Ember didn't even see it. That was the 2nd time I've seen him cry. The first is when we were 3 and I stole his orange juice. I smiled slightly at that memory.

"What are you smiling at?" he asked confused.

"Nothing. Just an old memory." I bent down and hugged him. "Everything's going to be fine." He just hugged me back.

That's all I could tell myself. Everything will be fine. They thought I was the strong one. The one who will figure it out in the end. The only one who will survive. I hope they were wrong. I don't know what I would do without them near me. With out my best friends. Without my crush. Without friends period.

"Um. Guys?" I heard Luke's voice break my thoughts.

"What?" I said looking up at him.

"Two miles to Canter." He told me looking at a sign up ahead. Canter was a big city. We could stock up there. In hopes we would only just find food a shelter.

"Good. We can stock up on things. I'm sure we need gas." I told him as he speeded up. Kay nodded as she looked at the gas gauge.

I sat back and looked over at Carter behind me. He smiled and reached out his hand. I took it. Squeezing his hand for strength. I looked over at Dawn. She hasn't said anything in a while. She must have felt my gaze because she turned to look at me. She smiled sadly. I got up from my position and climbed back into the back still looking at her. I then held my hands out to her. She hesitantly got up and climbed over to me. She sat to my left while Carter sat to my right. I hugged her to me as she returned it more than greatfully. She was the only family I had left that I knew of. I laid my head ontop of hers and closed my eyes. I felt Carter's arm go around my waist and I smiled. I could feel my shirt dampen from Dawn's small tears. I knew she was hoping I wouldn't notice. She was trying to be strong.

"We're here" Luke announced.

"Find a store or gas station." I told him. I looked down at Dawn and smiled. She smiled back this time genuinely. I hope we wouldn't run into too much trouble. But then again. Where there's a city, there are people. Lots of people.
