"Hello. Are you Jeremy?"

"Yes, that's me. Are you here for Adventurers Without Borders?"

"Yes. I'm Jonathan Lionheart, nice to meet you. So, what exactly do you do?"

"We're a group of adventurers whose mission is to use our special powers to help solve global problems."

"Sounds like a lofty goal. What kind of problems?"

"Well, mostly the problem of evil rulers. Studies show that having an evil leader can significantly impede a kingdom's economic growth. Did you know that 75 percent of underdeveloped kingdoms have rulers that have been officially classified as evil by Villainy International?"

"So you're off to depose evil rulers, aren't you? Well, I'm pretty good at that."

"Well, that's most of what we do, but we do some other stuff. Right now, we're trying to help resolve the situation in Pablumia."

"What's going on there?"

"The Red faction and the Blue faction are trying to take control of the green objective points. The first faction to get all three of them will control the region. Fighting is sporadic so far, but once the red dots move behind the blue territory boundary we're gong to be seeing a lot of dark brown corpse dots showing up."

"So what do you want me to do?"

"Our overall plan is to get one of the objective points and hold it. If we can convince the factions that neither of them can win, that might make them stop.

"Okay, so where should I go?"

"Unfortunately, the only way into Pablumia is via teleporter, which takes you to a random place in the region, and you can't control where you end up. So whenever you decide to go, just call me when you get there, and I'll tell you what you need to do next."


The next day, in Dr. Halperton's office…

"I am here as you expected," said Jonathan. "What do you require of me?"

"Your task is simple," said Halperton. "I am testing a magical portal device. Three people who went through have not returned, and I can't seem to get into contact with them. Your mission is to find out what happened to them, and bring them back alive if possible."

"And where exactly does this portal lead?" asked Jonathan.

"We don't know," said Halperton.

"Well, don't you think it would be a good idea to find out where it leads before you send me through it? I wouldn't want to be sent to certain death."

"And how do you propose to do that?"

"We could start by sending in something that's expendable. Something that we don't really care if we lose."

"That was my original plan, wasn't it?"

"Are you saying you consider me expendable?"

"I, uh, well … that's not what I was saying. But you're right. We should send in someone else." Halperton picked up the phone and dialed a number. "Is this Henchpersons-To-Go? I'd like one medium-size henchman, please deliver to Carpathia University, building 3. You'll be there in 15 minutes? Got it."

"That wasn't what I meant," said Jonathan.

"Okay, then what's your better idea?"

"You know what? I'll just do this myself. The fewer useless henchpeople that want to take my loot, the better."

"Okay, take this," said Haperton, handing him a piece of paper with the names and pictures of the people he was trying to rescue.

Jonathan stepped through the portal.
