The Academy

Prologue

1895

Rain slashed against the windows as Rosemary walked down the hall towards the headmistress' office. Her heart pounding with fear at what she was about to do, Rosemary steeled herself and clenched her fists determinedly. It was too late to turn back now! The double doors at the end of the hallway loomed out of the darkness ominously, both beckoning her and making her want to run away as fast as she could and never look back.

A few more paces and Rosemary was at the doors. Was it her imagination, or had the handles just glowed a deep blood red? She shook her head, taking a deep breath to try and calm down. She could do this! Reaching down, she gripped the handle and slowly pulled back the heavy door. She stepped inside the dark room, and the door slammed shut behind her just as a crash of thunder sounded directly overhead.

Rosemary could see her goal, on the desk across the room. The leather bound book with silver markings that seemed to glimmer even in the darkness caused her to quicken her pace, crossing the room in a dash and grabbing the book. Suddenly, a flash of lightning lit up the room and Rosemary thought she saw movement out of the corner of her eye. Spinning around, it was too late and she started running towards the door. Then-

"Rosemary! I see you! You can't get away. You have my book." Said a sing-song-y voice from in the darkness.

Terrified, Rosemary ran to the doors and frantically turned the handles. The doors were locked! Panting, back against the doors, she faced the dark room. Another flash of lightning illuminated a hand holding a knife, coming down towards her. Rosemary screamed, and then there was silence.
