Hazy Dreams

The sun was setting.

The day bid the sky a final farewell as the sun dipped below the horizon, shades of amber and ruby melding together into a perfect picture. The landscape below the heavenly violet sky was as ethereal as the moon. Grass coated the smooth ground, flowers of many different colors blooming over the field. Vivacious petals swirled in the cool breeze, giving off a magical and harmonious atmosphere. As the sun's wings stretched far and wide across the field, a young woman watched the golden sphere of life disappear, her cinnamon-colored eyes crinkling at the corners at the breathtaking show.

Said woman had her pale and slender hands clasped behind her back, her long wavy brown curls tumbling down to the small of her back. She was wearing a plain white sundress with flowers printed across the outfit and matching sandals with straps. Her expression was serene as she slowly closed her eyes and smiled as if waiting for someone.

Night came a moment later, the stars appearing one by one like scattered rain. The crescent moon rose high in the velvet night, illuminating the beautiful girl with its glorious light. Her eyes were still closed, the smile still in place, frozen in this moment of time. The wind began to sing quietly in her ears and her fingers tingled in anticipation as a sweet melody played in her mind.

Warmth filled her lungs and her whole body trembled in euphoria as someone wrapped their strong arms around her small frame. Her lids slowly lifted and crinkled at the corners. She placed a hand on the warm arms and inhaled deeply.

"Hey there." As the deep and hypnotic voice filled her ears, she shivered involuntarily.

"Hey. I haven't seen you in so long," she whispered longingly, shifting her eyes sideways. Her heart clenched painfully at the thought of never seeing this man again, of losing him just within her reach. As if reading her frantic mind, he placed a tender kiss on her rosy lips.

"Don't be afraid. I'm not going anywhere."

The woman smiled into the sweet kiss, drinking it in and savoring it. She opened her chocolate eyes and they saddened somewhat. Once again, she was unable to see his face. She could make out his mouth and part of his nose, but his eyes were blanketed in shadow. The wind gently combed its breathy fingers through his unruly jet black hair, tickling the young woman's nose.

She sighed and they broke the chaste kiss, the mystery man's arms wrapped around her slim waist. The brown-eyed woman could feel tears stinging at the corners of her eyes, the solid lump forming in her throat. She looked away, avoiding eye contact and tracing the patterns upon the ground. Sensing the change of mood, the man quietly lifted her chin so he could see her distressed face.

"Tell me what's bothering you." His thumb caressed her smooth jaw line and she shivered, leaning into the touch.

"How long has this dream been going on? I don't even know your name. I…I don't even know if you're truly real. You're just too…perfect," she whispered, sighing again. The man paused, mouth parted slightly as he searched for the right words to say. After a moment his lips closed and a grim expression replaced his previous smile.

"Perfect," he whispered hauntingly. The enigmatic man slowly lowered his arms from her sides, leaving the young woman feeling cold from the sudden lack of warmth. "Sometimes I feel the same about you as well. Are you truly alive?" He brought a hand up and ran his fingers through her silky hair, hearing her sigh. "Or are you merely an illusion created from my lonely mind?"

She felt her heart clench painfully. If this man, this perfect man of her dreams (literally), was anything but a truth, she didn't think she could bear it. The brunette found herself taking a step back as her silent partner reached out with a masculine arm to reach for her.

"We'll find each other," she vowed, mouth and eyes set firmly in determination. The man paused and after a moment retracted his hand, a small smile beginning to twitch at the corners of his full lips. He nodded once as the dream started to shatter, and the landscape surrounding the pair melted into oblivion.

She awoke with a start as the line between fantasy and reality became clear once more. The night was cold on her pale face as she sat up and she shivered in the recesses of her thick comforters. The moon bathed her in its celestial glow, painting strange shadows across her youthful face. The brown-eyed woman found herself sighing in despair. Although she had told that perfect man she would find him…it was nearly impossible.

But I must not give up hope.

Lying back down on her pillow, she gazed up at the dark ceiling, golden orbs shimmering in the hazy night She lowered her thick lashes as sleep consumed her once more. I will find a way. I will find you.

Faraway, thousands of miles across foreign lands and waters, a young man deep in slumber smiled.
