Across you over coffee

You're quiet, closed

A moving sign on your front lawn

"Why?"

Its all you've said today

Besides hello

I set down my mug

Hands warm against your hurt and chilly gaze

Chilly? Perhaps you're just confused.

You don't see things as simple

Right or wrong or grey

So now we're here

I twist the ring she gave me

And reach over to tap yours

You flinch

"The same reason you wear that"

You shake your head

I sigh, but it doesn't hurt anymore

"I love him" you say

I can hear the accusation

"Yes" I say, and smile sadly

"And I love her" so cliché

I slide the ring into my palm

Perhaps this will be the last time you ask me that.
