"Winter Chill"

I remember the winter chill.
I was freezing that night.
You stood there, frozen with a smile plastered on your pale face.
I squinted my eyes.
Were you really smiling?
You never smile.
Out of instinct, I smiled back.
You frowned.
I looked at you, confused.
You took me into your arms, whispering 'Shhh' softly in my ear.
I wanted to ask you what was wrong, but I shut my mouth.
My heart was wild, yet I was calm.
The wind sent chills through me.
I pretended not to care.
You pulled away slowly, gazing into my eyes.
I looked up at you.
I watched your eyes glisten with unshed tears.
I opened my mouth, but you shook your head 'No'.
You smiled at me.
I forced myself to smile again, too.
I always smile.
You told me it was the last time you'd see me smile.
I stopped smiling.
You told me you had to go soon.
I was speechless.
The wind threw my hair in my face, pricking my eyes.
I angrily wiped the strands away.
You stood there, frozen with a fake smile plastered on your pale face.
You stood, taking your last breath.
And you fell, letting your last breath go.
I remember the winter chill.
I was freezing that night.
