Darkness

The darkness of death
Purges the light.
And all of our hopes
Leave and take flight.

The red of the dawn
Replaces the night,
Awakening in us
Our own fright.

The sound of the trumpet
Does not stir our hearts;
The days of valor
Are dead, never to start.

The gray of the days
Pierces us like a dart.
Sunny days are no more;
We are so far apart.

Away from the dawn,
Away from the light:
With nothing left,
Dark fantasies take flight.

No matter who finds me,
No matter what they say,
You can't take
My darkness away.

The pain of the battles
Is not as they said;
No one ever told us
About anxious dread.

The deeds of war
Stain our hands red.
With hands numb from shooting,
We bury the dead.

The black of the trenches
Fills all our dark dreams.
Together we're distant,
Alone yet a team.

The rumble of thunder
Is not what it seems;
No matter how loud,
It can't drown out the screams.

If you think you can save me
Then I'll prove you wrong.
I've gone too far down
That path alone.

If you want to help me
Then just stay away.
My fate's in the dark;
I'll face it alone.

Away from the dawn,
Away from the light:
With nothing left,
Dark fantasies take flight.

No matter who finds me,
Not matter what they say,
You can't take
My darkness away.

The light of the dawn
Will not reach us here.
In our numb hearts
There is nothing but fear.

Away from the dawn,
Away from the light:
With nothing left,
Dark fantasies take flight.

No matter who finds me,
No matter what they say,
My darkness is
Here to stay…

No, you can't take
My darkness away.
