A/N: PLEASE READ: Okay so I recently scanned through this and... hmm... I can't even really think of a word that covers it well enough so I'll just stick with HORRIBLE. It's so bad. :P So before anyone completely bashes it, not that anyone has done so as of yet- which I really can't understand- I will be the first to warn you guys not to read it. I'm considering deleting it but because so many of you seem to like it, for whatever reason, I may just leave it up. I don't know... But anyway, that was my warning. If you would still like to read it then by all means go ahead but, remember, you have been warned. ;)
Love Not Even the Heart Understands
Chapter one: Well, this should be interesting…
Beep! Beep! Beep!
I smacked the snooze button on my alarm clock, annoyed at the evil and very noisy thing, only to have it go off about five minutes later. I groaned and stretched lazily while glancing at the alarm clock and the big brown box, which it was currently resting on., that was next to the mattress on the floor.
6:45 a.m.
I closed my eyes, tiredness getting the best of me, but they quickly shot open when I realized the time. I flopped my body out of the bed quickly only to fall down; due to the sheets wrapped around my ankles.
"Oomph, fuck!" I yelled as I untangled the sheets from my legs.
I quickly scrambled off of the floor and ran to the bathroom; stripping off my clothes in a hurry. I was really, really late. And with my luck I would miss my plane. Boy would that suck.
I turned on the water and quickly hopped in the shower not even bothering to check the temperature, but once the cold water hit my body I let out a screech of surprise.
"Ahhh, fuck, fuck! Cold!" I rambled while fixing the water temperature. If I wasn't up before, that sure as hell did the trick.
After taking the quickest shower in the world, I quickly got dressed and ran to my bedroom; picking up the turned over box that my alarm clock was sitting on and quickly began throwing in any last minute things that I forgot the night before. Once I was finished grabbing all of the things I needed, I continued to run around my practically empty apartment like a headless chicken.
"Keys…" I muttered while looking around the apartment; No keys.
I ran around looking for my keys for about five minutes. It was amazing; practically no furniture and I still managed to loose my damn keys… After searching for another five minutes and still no keys I stopped and stood in the middle of the room; hands on hips as I gazed around.
My eyes landed on the box that I was throwing last minute things into and my eyes narrowed slightly. I walked over to the box that I had hastily threw my items in, and of course there were my keys. I rolled my eyes and ran out the door barley glancing back at my once content life in California…
I sighed and walked out closing the door to one life and walking into a whole new one. Once I got to the airport I began pushing past some people walking by, hitting them with my bags accidentally.
"Oops, sorry!" I said while holding up an apologetic hand.
I managed to get to my gate just as my plane was boarding, and quickly ran over in a hurry. I finally got seated and rested my head against the back of the chair sighing a sigh of relief and contentment as I gazed out the window.
-Flash back-
Frankie Carusso, Nick Gabarino, Vinny Marino, Lily Parker, Erin Henderson, and I were all in the field in the park one afternoon playing a game of soccer.
Lily, Erin, and I were about seven years old at the time which made Nick and Vinny at the ages of eight and my brother Frank being the oldest at age nine.
It was a sunny afternoon and we all decided to play the traditional soccer match; boys against girls.
We were really into the game and we hadn't noticed a pit-bull wander into the open field, until Vinny ran after the soccer ball coming face to face with the huge mutt himself.
His eyes widened as he saw the dog bare his teeth as he screamed "Run!!"
We all looked in his direction to see what the cause of his sudden outburst was and once our gaze landed on the dog, our eyes widened and we ran; once we noticed the dog baring his sharp teeth at us and a low growl escaping his lips that is.
"Ahhh!!" We all yelled in union as we ran down the block, the dog not far behind.
"Holy shit!!" Frankie yelled as he began to run faster; I didn't even bother yelling at him for his language as I normally would have since all my attention on keeping my little legs running as fast as they could carry me.
The dog continued to growl and we continued to yell at the top of our lungs. I glanced ahead to see that Erin's house wasn't far ahead and noticed that the rest of the kids were a little more ahead of me since they were taller which made there legs slightly longer than mine.
Before I could quicken my pace I felt the dogs heavy breath practically on my lower back.
"Frankie!!" I yelled just as his feet touched the steps of Erin's porch.
"Gracie Run!!" He yelled but my legs wouldn't go any faster
"Help me dammit!" I yelled and he ran down the steps but then stopped. My eyes widened.
'What the hell was he doing?!' I thought
"Frankie! Get your ass over here and help me!!" I shouted; outraged and shocked that he was gonna leave me to be doggie chow.
"HIT HIM!" He yelled
"What?!" I yelled, outraged and shocked.
"HIT HIM!!" They all cried, I let out a tiny squeak as I turned my skinny, petite body around and kicked the dog right in the nose, turning back around and running as fast as I could while screaming. "AHHH!!" I finally reached my brother and he grabbed my hand pulling me into Erin's house.
Once we were in we all leaned against the door panting like crazy but then we all looked at each other and began to laugh.
–End of flash back-
I smiled to myself at my child hood memory and at the fact that I would finally be able to see them all again.
Me and my brother Frankie had always been close when we were growing up; since basically all we had was each other and our grandmother. Our parents both died when we were young, our mother from breast cancer and our father shortly after from a car crash. So after all of that our grandmother raised the both of us the best she could with out our grandfather and to be honest I thought she did a pretty damn good job.
Despite how much I hate to fly I felt all giddy inside knowing that I was finally gonna get my dream job, and be able to see and speak to my family and best friends daily rather than monthly or only through phone calls.
I just hope that the whole living arrangement works out. You see, Frankie offered to let me have the spare room in his apartment until I could find a place of my own. But there was one thing, he said that he had a roommate. Now normally that would be great, but he refused to tell me who it was; I of course demanded that he tell me but he said I would find out soon enough.
I couldn't turn down the apartment since I got the job on such short notice and couldn't find an apartment in Manhattan fast enough. So I guess I just have to wait it out and find out who my new roommate will be in a few hours.
I leaned back in my seat in the airplane and gazed out the window, thinking of who my roommate could be, and why Frankie wouldn't tell me who it was…
Anyway back to my reasons to be utterly happy and excited. One: I get to see my brother who is also like a best friend to me, Two: I get to see my grandmother; who I haven't seen in about a year since I moved out of New York. Sure I called her but it's not the same as actually seeing a person. Especially someone you care a great deal about.
Three: I get to see my best friend's Lily Parker and Erin Henderson. Lily, Erin, and I have always been there for each other through the ups and downs; we always stuck together no matter what. But there was always this kind of bond that me and Lily had that me and Erin never did. Now don't get me wrong, Erin is just as great to me as Lily is but there was always something different about me and Lily's friendship that I could never quite place, but I knew I could never lose either, and that is one of the main reasons we are still friends today.
Four: I would love to see all the other people that I left behind when I moved to California. Like Vinny, Nick- wait Nick! Oh god Nick! Ugh I really hope I don't have to see that jack ass… Even though I know for a fact that I would be seeing quite a lot of him… he is my brothers best friend so I will definitely be seeing him around, especially that I'm going to be living in my brothers apartment…
Ugh I am definitely working my ass off so I can save money up to get my own apartment soon! Don't get me wrong though, Nick isn't that bad of a guy. It's just, personally, I think he's a dickhead. He practically has a new girl every week, he just plays with girls hearts and when he's had enough of them, he drops 'em like a ton of bricks.
For example one year he went out with one of my good friends Anna Chase. She was a really sweet girl who had a crush on Nick for as long as I can remember, and one day he finally picked up on it I guess and he asked her out. Now of course Anna said yes, but he ended up breaking her heart. After like a week he found some blonde bimbo and dropped Anna like he does to every girl he has.
To me that is just a very dick headed thing to do…
The ironic thing is that we actually used to be friends at one time. It's just, it always pissed me off when he played with girls hearts like that, which he did on a weekly basis... Eventually I got fed up with it. And it happened to be the Anna situation that turned out to be the last straw. So, I confronted him.
Which turned out to be uglier than one might think it would be and one thing led to another and we stopped being friends, and soon enough, turned into enemies. It's actually kind of stupid now that I think of it but- my thoughts were interrupted when I felt someone gently tap my arm, and I turned my gaze from the window to have it land on the flight attendant.
"Ma'am we should be landing soon, please make sure you have your seat belt on until we are safely on the ground." She said politely and I nodded.
"Okay, thank you." I replied while gathering my ipod from the table in front of me and putting it safely into my bag.
Once we were safely on the ground we all began to walk off the plane; bags in hand. I walked into the airport lobby and looked around to see if I saw my brother anywhere.
"Gracie!!"
I turned around in the direction I heard my name being called and my face lit up when my eyes landed on my brother. He looked the same; his dark brown hair slightly spiked with gel, leaving it to shine a little when the light hit it, and his dark brown eyes sparkling. It looked like he grew a few inches over the past year, making him some where close to 6 foot maybe. I smiled at him and walked over.
"Hey!" He said and threw his arms around me in a brotherly hug; swaying me from side to side. I laughed and hugged him back."Wow, look at you; you look great Grace." He said while looking me over.
My long brown hair fell to about mid-back; my hazel eyes shimmering in the light. Sadly I was still short at only 5 foot; didn't grow much from that child hood memory back on the plane but it's okay.
I smiled. "You don't look so bad yourself." I said while giving him a playful shove on the shoulder.
He smiled and put his arms around my shoulders while walking me to the car. "So, how was the flight?" He asked.
I sighed, "Horrible. I hate flying."
He laughed. "Yeah, you always have." I nodded and climbed into the passenger seat. He got into the drivers seat and started up the car; while I looked out the window smiling, it felt so great to be home. "I'm glad your home Grace. It hasn't been the same since you left."
I smiled over at him. "I know. But don't worry I'm not going anywhere anytime soon."
He nodded. "Good."
I smiled but then remembered about the living arrangement. "Are you gonna tell me who's our roommate already?" I asked, and he smiled.
"Not yet. You'll find out soon we're almost there." He said as he made a left turn.
"Then if we're gonna be there soon what's the difference if you tell me now?" I pressed but he just smiled.
"Nope." I rolled my eyes and folded my arms; while slumping back in the seat.
"You suck." I muttered
"Aww, I love you too Grace." He said I turned my head and stuck my tongue out at him, he laughed. After a few more turns we were there; he parked the car and we got out. "Well, here we are." He said while putting the alarm on his car, I couldn't stop smiling as I ran for the elevator. He laughed and walked over a little behind me.
Once we got in front of his apartment door I was practically hopping up and down, while Frankie laughed, "Gracie, calm down it's just an apartment. You've been here before anyway." He pointed out; I stuck my tongue at him once again and he shook his head lightly.
He opened the door revealing a nice sized living room; with a big couch, a loveseat, and a coffee table set in front of the big couch. There was a big screen TV, a radio, and a play station two lying on the floor in front of the TV. By the TV was a DVD rack with about a million DVD's, a little further down there was a door to another room; the bathroom. The kitchen was attached to the living room; it was you normal kitchen. It was just how I remembered it.
I turned when I heard a door open and saw the bathroom door open with a guy standing in front of it, in just a pair of sweats. His short dark brown hair was messy, making him look ver cute and also look like he had just got out of bed; and from the way he was yawning I assumed he probably did. He looked in the direction of me and my brother and once I caught a glimpse of his dark blue eyes I instantly knew who it was; Nick.
My eyes widened at him, and I turned to my brother. "What's he doing here?" I asked while pointing at Nick.
My brother opened his mouth to say something but Nick cut in. "It's nice to see you too Gracie." He said sarcastically while walking into the kitchen and pouring himself some orange juice.
I rolled my eyes and looked at my brother waiting for him to continue, "Well, Nick is our other roommate." He said with a small nervous smile, my eyes widened, and I heard Nick choke on his orange juice.
"What?!" We both asked making me see he obviously wasn't told about this either.
No wonder he wouldn't tell me who our roommate was, I definitely wouldn't have agreed to come live here.
"What are you talking about?!" We both said again, we looked at each other, glared a little, and then looked back at Frankie.
"Would you guys calm down? It's not that bad." Frankie shrugged.
Nick looked like he was gonna say something but I cut in. "What do you mean not that bad? I can't live with him! Why didn't you tell me it was him? I could have found another place!" I yelled.
He put his hands on my shoulders to calm me down. "Gracie, face it. You would not have been able to afford an apartment in Manhattan by yourself with what you were making back in California, It would have been impossible. And I was not gonna let you give up on this job offer. This has been your dream since you were five, you're not gonna give it up over a stupid thing like this." He took a deep breath and then looked over at Nick, "And you are not going anywhere either. I know you both don't get along but it's been almost over a year since you saw eachother maybe things changed. So we're all gonna stick this out, we're all adults now and you sometimes have to do things you don't like. Like I said you're both not going anywhere." He finished and picked my bags up bringing them to the spare room down the hall while muttering something under his breath that sounded close to: "And that's the end of that tune." leaving me and Nick standing there staring at each other, not sure what to say or do.
Well, this should be interesting…
