Author's Notes: This is an affirmation poem for everyone who wants a revolution but feels that it is coming too slowly. In writing this, I got to indulge my real slam poetry side. Enjoy

THE WRITTEN REVOLUTION

Sticks and stones

May break my bones

But words will shatter spirits

Or uplift your fists and eyes

Newfound faith in sapphire skies

Never underestimate the power of a voice

Words have no legs

And yet they walk

Words have no lips

And yet they talk

Words have no keys

And yet they open doors

Words have no wings

And yet they soar

SOAR

Into the ears of artists

And right over the heads of those who say

Our poetry is meaningless

Sticks and stones

May break my bones

But words will pierce like bullets

RAPE, a word with fangs

A young girl's spirit broken

UGLY, a slug to the head

An ego falls dead at my feet

And we wild this power

To stop hearts or revive them

To scorch wayward fingers

Or warm frost-bitten hands

The words are not a cry for revolution

The words ARE the revolution!

Sticks and stones

May break my bones

But words will call the army

We rise to the fight for liberation

Armed with our WORDS

For the metaphoric shootouts to come

Sticks and stones

May break my bones

But words will give me cover

Keep me safe

And dry my tears

Like the warm arms of a lover

Your words are precious

Hold them close

And send them out to stop the war

Cuz words can be the peacekeepers

If you teach them in the ways of Gandhi

Walking in the footsteps of Che

Malcolm X and Martin Luther

Sticks and stones

May break my bones

But words will give me freedom

Give US freedom

From this uphill struggle

No more wasted souls

Living vicariously through the unforgiving sting of syringes

FREEDOM

We will rise like Maya Angelou

From this government-given drug-induced dreamland

And live

Live a life that will be told in constellations

And history books

And passed down from father to son

Mother to daughter

It's sticks and stones

So know your power

your tongue can hold venom

or elixir

how will you use

your words
