Incrimination

My enemies are pride and fear,
Their hostage have I been;
If I've been cold and cruel, my dear,
It was because of them.
So if I hurt you, if I hid,
And if I laughed or lied,
It was because of fear I did,
It was because of pride.
And if at you my courage failed,
It was because of them, you see,
But dear, if fear and pride prevailed,
Then it was all because of me.
