Author's note: I originally wrote this for my creative writing class at school, but ended up not using it. It was supposed to be funny but I think it ended up just being a little more silly and random than I wanted it to. I thought I'd put it on the site just for fun, so if you like it, thanks. :-) Fred awoke in the middle of the night to a very annoying noise; it didn't take him long to realize that someone was knocking on the door. Tired and irritated by the sound, he glanced at his clock. Who would be at his house at two in the morning? Groaning, he got out of bed, put on his dirty white shirt from yesterday, and went to answer the door.
Upon opening the door, Fred was enthusiastically greeted by his good friend Steve. However, since he was still somewhat groggy from being woken up, Fred didn't recognize him at first. "Hey, Fred!", Steve cried, stepping into the house. "May I come in? Sorry about the intrusion--I was just in the neighborhood and thought I'd stop by." Steve's eyes were bulging wide; he was clearly not tired at all.
Fred finally woke up a little bit more and recognized his friend. "Steve?', he asked. "What are you doing here at this hour? Aren't you tired"
"Nope!", Steve exclaimed. "Just had four cups of espresso! So, what have you been up to"
Even though Fred's guest was being very rude at the time, Fred did not want to be rude to his guest. "Oh, not much...I was just taking a little nap." Fred yawned; he was exhausted and couldn't wait to get back to bed.
"That's cool.", said Steve. "Hey, you got anything to eat here? I'm star"
At that moment, there was another knock on the door. Apparently frightened, Steve glanced out the window. His face turned pale and three words left his mouth: "It's the cops"
Fred was startled and confused, but before he could say anything, two police officers entered unbidden. "Excuse me.", said one. "Do either of you own the car with license plate number MDS-0925"
Fred glanced skeptically toward Steve. "That's your car.", he said. "Is there something I should know here"
Steve glanced back sheepishly. "Uh, the four cups of espresso I had made me kind of hyper, and I was maybe kinda driving a few miles over the speed limit...The cops tracked me here"
"Twenty miles over the speed limit, to be exact.", one of the police put in.
"And now that we've found our culprit,", said the other, "Both of you are under arrest. You have the right to remain silent"
"Wait!", Fred exclaimed. "What did I do? Why am I under arrest"
"You were harboring a criminal in your house.", one of the officers explained. "Come peacefully, or we'll shoot"
"This is crazy!", Fred protested.
Thinking quickly, Steve grabbed Fred and pulled both of them over to a door on the side of the wall. "You'll never catch us!", Steve cried, exiting along with Fred.
Fred was glad to be safely outside, but then he realized something strange. "Wait a second.", he said. "I don't have a door there"
"You don't?", asked Steve. "Then how did we just escape through it"
"I'm not sure.", Fred replied. "The only explanation I can think of is that this is all a dream"
Suddenly Fred was back in his bed. Steve and the police men were nowhere to be seen. "Then it was just a dream!", Fred said aloud. "Boy, that was crazy...I wonder where it all came from?" He sighed, unable to come up with an answer, and closed his eyes to go back to sleep.
Then he heard a knock at the door.
