VI. Not A Young Poet

To be young and not write poetry
Is an inestimable blessing
To be spared lugubrious love lyrics
Or songs prone to confessing

Or elegies to dead pets,
Ballads for the banal,
Odes to room furniture or
Pleas from the unstable:

These are all far beyond me
Thank God that I know it
May the Lord bless and keep me
From being a young poet.
