"So," Doctor Richards said, wiping his hands off on a paper towel when he had finished setting the cast on my right arm. The nurse finally left and he turned to me. "How did this happen?"
"I fell," I said looking at the cast, not meeting his eyes.
"Evan," he said sighing, Dr. Richards had been my physician since I was little. "This is the fifth time in two months that you've been in here for injuries from "falling"."
"I'm a klutz," I said shrugging. Dr. Richards sighed again and picked up a perscription pad.
"All right, I'm going to write you a perscription for pain medication." I nodded and stood up, taking the paper from him and turned towards the door but his hand on my arm stopped me. "If you want to talk or you need help, I'll listen," he said and I could read the concern in his eyes.
"Thanks Dr. Richards," I said pulling my arm out of his grip and stepped out. I turned left and walked past the receptionists desk waving at the receptionist and passed a very good looking young man.
"Hey Evan," he said waving and I waved back.
"Hey Brad," I said, nodding. Brad was a male nurse, I wasn't sure he was gay or not but I had my suspicions, he was damn cute though. Sighing I pulled my jacket on slipping one arm in and laying it over the other side. I walked outside and looked around trying to figure out a way to get home. My friend Amy had dropped me off and I had told her to leave, I didn't want her pity, but now I was sorry. Sitting down on a bench, I decided to think about my situation and looked up when I heard a horn honk and I felt myself pale. The driver climbed out and walked towards me and I glared.
"Get in the car Evan," he said, sounding angry which I didn't get, what the hell did he have to be angry about?
"No Chris," I snapped turning away from him.
"Evan," he said quietly and I knew that tone and a small sliver of fear made its way down my spine.
"I'm not going with you Chris," I said standing, cradling my arm to my side. His eyes flashed and I swallowed and he grabbed my good arm and started pulling me towards the car. "Let me to Chris!" I cried and he turned back to me, a hand raised and I flinched away.
"What's going on here?" a voice asked and we both looked up to see Brad coming towards us.
"Nothing, I'm just giving my boyfriend a ride home," Chris said, lowering his arm.
"You can't," Brad said simply and Chris' eyes flashed again.
"Why is that?"
"Because Doctor Richards needs to see him about the perscription he gave him," and with that Brad took my arm and pulled me back into the hospital. I looked back once and saw the anger in Chris' face and knew I'd pay for this later.
"You shouldn't have done that," I said quietly, trying to keep the tears back, afraid of seeing Chris again.
"Is he the reason you 'fell'?" he asked and I was surprised to hear a hint of anger in his voice.
"He didn't mean to," I said quietly and gasped when I was pushed into a chair in the waiting room.
"Oh, like he 'didn't mean to' almost hit you out there?" Brad snapped and I pulled away from him, not understanding why he was so angry. He looked at me for a moment before sighing and sitting in the chair next to me.
"Do you have a place to go?" he asked.
"Yes, home," I said, staring at the floor.
"Will he be there?"
"Yes, we live together," I stated quietly.
"Are you sure you should go back there?"
"I have no where else to go," I said looking up meeting his eyes for a moment before returning them to the ground. Brad sighed and stood, stretching.
"Come on, I'll take you home,' he said and I stood also.
"Are you sure you have no other place to go?" he asked when we pulled up in front of my apartment building.
"Yes," I said sighing.
"All right, here," he said, handing me a peice of paper with a number on it and I looked at him questioningly. "My number in case you need anything."
"Oh ok," I said reaching for the door handle.
"I'm serious," he said, grabbing my arm. "Call me if you need anything."
"Thanks," I said pulling my arm away and climbing out of the car. I looked up the stairs and to my front door and looked down the road after Brad, thinking of flagging him down and asking him to tak me somewhere else. Instead, I started walking up the stairs and unlocked my door, stepped in and closed it behind me.
"Chris?" I called fearfully. I heard a noise to my right and turned to see a fist flying at me. I dropped to the ground, gripping my cheek and looked up to see a very pissed off man.
"So you're cheating on me is that it?" he snarled standing over me and I gawked at him.
"No!" I cried and grunted when his foot connected with my stomach.
"Don't lie to me," he growled, kicking me twice more before pulling me to my feet.
"I'm not lying," I cried out between pained gasps. He slammed me against the door several times, my head hitting it painfully.
"You'd better not, because if you do," he said, slamming me back once more, "I'll kill you," he snarled. I nodded my pounding head and he pulled me into his arms and turned to head towards the bedroom and I fought being nauseated. When he was done with me, he stood up and got dressed and looked at me in disgust.
"Clean yourself up, I'm going out," with that he turned and walked out of the apartment, slamming the door behind him. I crawled out of the bed and made my way painfully and slowly into the bathroom and looked at myself in the mirror. There was a large bruise starting to form on the right side of my face and my stomach and ribs were starting to collect their own sets. I turned to the tub and put the stopper in and turned on the water to as hot as I could stand it. While it filled up, I moved to the kitchen for some ice, rememebering from my EMS class in high school that it was the best thing for bruises. I hissed when I put the ice on my ribs and turned back to the bathroom. I sat on the toilet and watched the tub fill and fought the tears and wondered for the hundredth time where everything had gone wrong.
I met Chris Stephens three years ago, a friend of my friend Amy's, he was chraming, sweet, funny and drop dead gorgeous with dark blue eyes and dirty blond hair and a body to die for. I'm a shy person by nature but there was something about Chris that brought me out of my shell. When I met him, I had been in a relationship with a guy that was slowly falling apart and I had learned that he was being transfered to a different state. He had asked me to go along but I had a great job and I didn't want to go. I met Chris three weeks before Adam moved away, Adam and I had had a huge fight before he left, said somethings I regret now and I found myself in Chris' arms that night. I had felt guilty, I had never done anything like that before and I had told Adam, thinking that we could have worked it out but he didn't want to try and he left after he tore my heart to peices. I guess I can't really say anything, I did cheat on him, but for the thousandth time I wondered how my life would be different if I had gone with him.
I stood and turned off the water and slid slowly into the water and leaned back and closed my eyes. A while later, I opened my eyes and noticed that the water was cold, I did that, fell asleep in the tub, I don't know how I didn't drown but I hadn't yet but sometimes... Shaking my head I climbed out of the tub stiffly and grabbed a towel I wrapped it around myself and headed back into the bedroom. I pulled on a pair of boxers and a pair of sweats and an old shirt of Adam's that Chris didn't know I had.
Once I was dressed I went to the hall closet and dug to the back to a box that had a bunch of my old school stuff, a box that I knew that Chris would never go through. At the bottom under several of my year books, I pulled out a loved photo album. I opened it and traced the face there, he had beautiful green eyes, light blonde hair, almost white and a smile that was warm and kind. I flipped through it for several more minutes before I heard keys in the lock. I quickly shoved the album back in the box and stood, stepping out of the closet and closed the door as the front door opened to reveal Chris with a boquet of flowers and an apologetic smile. I sighed as he came towards me, knowing I eventually needed to get out of this relationship before he killed me.
