On the roadside you hesitate.

The hills in the distance shiver in the heat haze

and the road shimmers like still water

The radio fades in between the white noise

and a dusty song from our parents youth

For some reason I want to cry

-

I know you don't want to kiss me

from the way you turn your gaze away

but the lights are red and

we are stuck in the moment

Another awkward silence,

miles to go and nothing to say

-

It would be so easy to just say the words,

give in and let it happen -

but you have pride to think about

Five-mile tail back and the taste of stale cigarette smoke

encrusted in the back seats

You refuse to look at me

-

I know you don't want to kiss me

from the way you turn your gaze away

but the lights are red and

we are stuck in the moment

Another awkward silence,

miles to go and nothing to say

-

Sticky heat and we're leaning out the windows

trying to sit as far from each other as we can

grasping on to some vague hope we'll last the traffic jam

and the crackling of the radio masks

the sobs I - can't - hold - - - -
