Counting Snowflakes

Tail lights flicker in the storm

Snow drifts across city streets

All about, Bundled little souls

Weaving by one another

Feet pounding cracked and weathered pavement

Brisk, cold breeze biting at their hands and faces

Snowflakes falling

Filling in footprints

Finding outstretched hands,

Tongues, windshields, stoops, balconies…

Covering the city in a blanket of white

The world has stopped;

Stalled out in the middle of a storm.

Frozen pink faces

swirling in frosted gray breaths

headlights catching stray snowflakes

with iridescent beams

the night suspended in a tranquil silence.

And sitting, watching, counting

The city and I…
