Everything was dead quiet and not a thing moved. All that could be heard was the rustling of the leaves in the wind.

Bryn shivered as the wind hit her small body and she pulled her cloak more tightly around her.

It was starting to get dark and she was afraid. She knew her mother wouldn't want her out so late by herself but something was going to happen tonight, she just knew it!

An owl hooted loudly up above her and Bryn's fear got the best of her. She had just turned to leave when she heard the snap of a twig behind her. A small squeal of surprise escaped her lips. She turned around slowly and exhaled deeply as she realized that Caldur had finally arrived.

The little green-eyed, scruffy looking boy had been Bryn's friend for the past week— ever since she found him roaming around the woods, lost. She had not told anyone else that she had found someone in the woods, and she wasn't sure why. She just had a feeling that Caldur should be kept a secret. Her mother called it "witches intuition", whatever that means.

"Caldur!" she exclaimed as the boy came out of the trees with a few twigs in his jet-black hair. She wrapped her arms around him in a tight hug, laughing joyously because he had made it. Neither of the two children had arranged to meet in the woods, somehow, both simply knew where and when to go and find the other. It was an unusual bond that the children had had since the first day they'd met.

"Shhhhhhh!" he said, looking behind him. "Not so loud, they might hear you!"

"Who would hear us?" Bryn asked.

"The other vampires. I just left and they'll be mad if they realize I've gone. I have to go soon. Look, I just came to warn you that you have to leave right now."

"Why? Where?"

"I don't know, anywhere! I just know that if you don't leave now, then something very bad is going to happen."

"I know," Bryn said. "I felt it too. And somehow, I knew that I would have to leave. But, what if we never see each other again?"

"Don't worry," he said. "We will." He smiled half-heartedly.

Bryn looked down and let a single tear fall to the ground.

Suddenly, up ahead, the two children heard someone calling for Caldur.

"Oh no… I have to go now," he said.

"Wait!" Bryn reached behind her neck and untied a necklace. Dangling from the thin rope was a crystal. She put it in Caldur's hand.

"It's pretty," he said. "What is it?"

Bryn sniffled. "It's a crystal. I made it for you. I put a spell on it, so that it will protect you when you're in danger. It gets warm whenever I'm near so that you'll always be able to find me."

"Thank you." Caldur dangled it from his hand and it shined blue in the moonlight.

"It's my color," Bryn explained. "All witches have a special color that they're born with."

Caldur smiled. "Neat!" He put it on his neck and hid it in his tunic.

Bryn looked at him. Her blue-eyes were filled with tears.

"I'm going to miss you." she said.

"I know, "he said. "Me too." He took both of her hands in his and kissed her on the cheek. Before he pulled away, he whispered in her ear.

"Don't forget me…"

Then he dropped her hands and ran through the trees. I won't ever forget you…Bryn thought as he was swallowed up by the darkness.
