Chapter 1 The Introduction of Satan's Son
God, he was so beautiful, yet so unattainable. Now you may be wondering why the said person was unattainable. Well for one he was my best friend. Yeah, I know. It has to be one of the worst situations possible. Of course it didn't help the fact that he treated me like his little sister. You have no idea how aggravating that can be. Well you might if you have ever been in my position before.
He kept talking about something that I had no idea about. I think it was something along the lines of cars, but I wasn't all that sure. I had lost track of what he was saying a long time ago. He could be quite distracting at times, especially when his lips would start to move. Yes, I agree, it is quite pathetic.
But I don't think that it would be so pathetic if you ever saw him. He was quite the Adonis, the typical Californian surfer, golden blonde hair and eyes as blue as the sky, with the build to match. Now I bet your thinking that guys who usually look like that turn out to be arrogant and an all around nasty person. Unfortunately for my sake, he wasn't. He was everyone's best friend. Even the "outcasts" in school liked him and they hated everyone.
So there you have it. This is my plight and you don't know how many times I wished that I could have stopped liking him and just be the best friend that I was supposed to be.
"Hello, earth to Lark. Are you still here?" Brent asked me while waving a hand in front of my face.
"Yeah, sorry. I was just day dreaming a bit," I said to him, giving him a small smile. He gave me a smile in return and continued to prattle on. Gosh, he could be dense sometimes.
This time I tried my best to pay attention and I tried to keep my eyes on his but they always traveled to his lips. So of course that made me think of kissing them, which also led me back to la-la land. At least this time I was able to nod my head in the appropriate places.
Suddenly the door came open and I jumped about three feet into the air.
"Aw, did I scare poor little Lark?" I just about groaned in response but I didn't want to start anything today so I kept my mouth shut. The man then laughed at me. I gritted my teeth and refused to look at him.
"Duncan just leave her alone for once, okay? Anyways what do you want?" I could tell that Brent was trying to hide the agitation in his voice.
Now I bet that you are all wondering who the heck Duncan is. Well for one he is the bane of my existence. Seriously. We cannot stand to be in each other's presence. We had met when I was a freshman and he was a sophomore. You see when Brent's mother had left him and his dad for another man Brent's dad was devastated. So of course he started to date again and that's where he met Duncan's mom, Allison, and I must admit she is one of the sweetest people around. That's why I don't understand how she could have had the son of Satan. My guess is that Satan seduced her and well we all know who came out of that relationship. But not even a year after they had met they got married. (This was when Brent and I had just started our sophomore year.) The ONLY good thing and I truly mean ONLY, was that Allison was nice and she truly liked her new husband and new stepson and of course they all got along peachy with each other.
Myself, on the other hand could not stand Duncan. He represented everything that I didn't like in a guy. He was proud, arrogant, and most importantly he thought that he was God's gift to women. NOT! I mean okay, he was hot, but he was exactly the opposite of Brent. He looked like he stepped right out of a movie. Duncan had black hair and these hazel eyes that seemed green but yet in a way they weren't green. Although I must admit he did have a nice body. I know this for a fact because one day he took off his shirt to work outside and I ogled a bit. This of course resulted in a fight in which I stormed off as usual.
"Have you finished that book that I wanted to borrow?" He asked Brent. Oh, and did I mention the kid was super smart.
Brent got up from his position on the bed to go over to his bookshelf. His hands skimmed over a few before he found the one he was looking for. He grabbed it then brought it over to Duncan.
"Thanks, and Lark maybe you should go to the doctor and get that jumpiness checked out, maybe it's stress related," Duncan smirked at me and left the room before I could utter a word. If he weren't stronger than me I definitely would have taken the chance to strangle him on the spot.
I sighed as loudly as I could and flopped down to lay on my back. "You know if you wouldn't react so strongly to the way he teased you then I bet he would leave you alone." Brent's soothing voice said to me.
"No, Brent, you know that he would find anyway possible to annoy me in some manner. I just don't know why he does it. I mean what have I ever done to him?" I said in somewhat of a whining voice. I couldn't help it. I was tired of all the crap that Duncan said and did to me.
"Who knows Lark and I really don't know what to tell you other than this is your last year that you'll have with him before he goes to college," Brent said whilst trying to cheer me up. I could always rely on him to do that. Now do you understand why I love the kid so much?
"True, I just hope that it doesn't get worse." I placed my arm over my eyes. I didn't get much sleep last night and I felt really tired.
Before Brent could answer me the phone began to ring. Brent grabbed the phone from his nightstand and picked it up.
"Hello?" Brent answered. I could hear someone on the other line. It appeared to be a girl, great more competition for me. There was some more small talk before Brent hung up the phone.
"Who was that?" I asked trying not to sound too jealous.
"That was Lydia. She wanted to know if we could go out sometime and I said yes."
"Oh, well that's nice. I've heard she's really nice." Well this was turning out to be a great day.
"Yeah, she really is," Brent, said with a dreamy expression on his face. Between Duncan and this, my mood plummeted. And the worst thing of all is that Lydia was actually a really nice person. We had even talked on a few occasions; therefore I couldn't hate her. The fates were decidedly cruel.
So I wouldn't suffer anymore I said, "Well Brent I need to go so I will see you tomorrow at school." I got off the bed and stood by his door waiting for his response.
"Okay, see ya." Apparently that was all I was going to get out of him for the moment and I left without a further word. Boys. I hated all of them. They never had a clue. Ok, so I really didn't voice my feelings to Brent but that was besides that point.
I shut the door behind me and headed downstairs. I waved bye to Allison who gave me a wave in return. I got to the front door and started to walk across the street to my house. Yes, you got it. Our houses are across from each other and it's been that way since I was five. Ah, I can see the memories now, Brent and I playing all hours of the day. Those were the days I tell you.
I finally reached my house and walked in. "MOM! I'm home!" I yelled.
"You sure have a big mouth Lark," said that all too irritating voice behind me.
"Duncan, what the heck are you doing in my house!?" I screeched. He had no right to be here. I mean this was MY house.
He smirked at me before saying, "Well your Dad wanted some help to redo the master bathroom and I volunteered. Plus I could use the extra cash."
This could NOT be happening to me. Of all the people that my Dad had to pick out to help it had to be Duncan. Why me? What have I done that is so terrible to deserve this fate?
"NO! You are not going to help my Dad redo the bathroom. You'll drive me up the freaking wall!" I all but screamed at him. Not one of my better days I tell you. Plus that bathroom was going to take a LONG time to get done. That means that he would be at my house a lot. I could not deal with this.
"Well apparently I am, so I guess that you'll just have to deal with it." He stood there his pose screaming confidence. Why couldn't I pull something off like that?
"UH!" I went over to the stairs and stomped the way up. I reached my door opened it and then proceeded to slam it. God that felt good. I went and laid on my bed. I could feel a headache coming on. Well this turned out to be the worst day of my life.
I picked up my phone from my nightstand and began to dial Vanessa's number. She was my best girl friend. I needed someone to vent to and she was the perfect person. She knew all about the Brent ordeal and of course Satan's son, Duncan.
"Hello?" I could tell that it was Vanessa's voice so I said, "Hey chica."
"Hey girl! What's up?" Her lilting voice soothed my frazzled nerves.
"You are not going to believe what happened to me. I'm telling you the fates have it in for me."
"Oh, does it have to do with Duncan?" she said.
"Of course. Can you believe that Satan's son agreed to help my Dad redo the master bathroom for money? So you know what that means. He's going to be here a LOT. I don't know what I'm going to do. You know how I can barely stand him when I go to Brent's." I moaned into the phone.
"I'm sorry Lark. I don't know what to tell you except just try and go out when he's around the house and you know you can always come here."
"Thanks Vanessa, I think I might take you up on that a couple times. Because lord knows I won't be able to stand him for long." I heard her laugh into the phone.
"You two act like a couple of grade school kids. It's like you two like each other, if you know what I mean, but you guys put up a front so that no one will find out," her tone was thoughtful, as if she just found out a big secret.
"Oh, come one Vanessa! That's bull and you know it."
"Maybe, maybe not." I had no idea what she was trying to get at but that was far from the truth. Duncan and I abhorred each other. We couldn't be around each other for a minute before we wanted to tear each other apart.
"Whatever Vanessa. Well look I'm going to go so I will see you tomorrow at school. Later."
"Alright chica, bye." I heard the click of the phone and then I placed my phone back onto its receiver.
What a day! So much had changed in such a short amount of time. Brent gets a date and then Duncan is working at my home. Life couldn't get any worse but of course as Murphy said anything that can go wrong will go wrong. And how right he was.
