Summer Fun

I've always considered myself to be a romantic. I love Cinderella stories and adore fairytales; I'm a happy-ending kind of girl. And to me, summer is the perfect time for romance. Maybe it's the sun, tanned skin, and warm nights that evoke a certain carefree attitude that makes us more open to romances, even if they are just the length of the summer.

Now, the idea of working at a summer day camp may not sound like a fairytale situation to most people. In fact, having a group of twenty eight-year olds all day could seem like the perfect nightmare. But I, on the other hand, enjoy working as a camp counselor, which I've been doing for the past two years. The kids are great, but the other counselors are what make camp so much fun, and are where the potential for summer romances is found. Think about it, for five days a week, eight weeks during the summer, the counselors are with one another. Chances are, at the end of the eight weeks, some counselors might want to hurt one another, but some strong friendships might have been made as well. Think of all the ways to flirt at a day camp. Now does it seem crazy that summer camp can be the ideal place to find fairytale romance?

Need further proof? Last summer, my sister had a crush on one of the other counselors. They flirted throughout the summer, he bought her flowers for her birthday, and they have been dating for the past year. So far, my summer at camp has already shown potential for a little romance as well.

"Camp is so much fun this year," I said to Melissa, my older sister, as we drove to work.

"You're only saying that because Jeremy flirts with you like crazy every day." She looked in the back of the car through the rear-view mirror. "Did you remember to bring an extra towel today? If he throws you in the lake again, I don't want the seats in my car to get wet."

"Yeah, I remembered," I said, grinning. "Do you really think he likes me?"

Melissa glanced over at me. "Of course he does. I mean, it's tradition to throw each counselor in the lake during the summer, but he's been doing it to you every day. I swear he's just looking for excuses to touch you."

"Well, it's nice to have the attention." For some reason, I couldn't stop smiling. "And at least it's hot outside, so I don't mind getting thrown in."

"Just be careful with him. He's not exactly what you would call mature. But then again, he is a 19 year old jock, so I guess you can't expect much from him."

"Melissa!" I threw my hands up in the air. "Come on. He's not that bad. I mean, he's spending his summer working at a day camp with the six-year olds and you know that's the worst group to have. At least you know he's responsible."

"And the fact that you have the seven-year olds so you and Jeremy have almost the same schedule had nothing to do with him choosing his group?" Melissa smiled. "Listen, have your fun, okay? I'm just saying that I would stay away from him if I were you."
