Chapter one

Death is everywhere it's all around us. Most people don't see it. Most people forget that everyday people die, simply because most of the time they don't know it.

They say that every minute someone dies.

My whole life I've witnessed it.

and noI can't see ghosts.

I see Death himself, lingering around for those next on his list. Forget the rumours, he isn't hooded and he doesn't have any weapon at all. He looks normal your average everyday guy, dressed in black, and those black eyes…

My first real encounter that I can remember was when I was five. I saw him behind my auntie, talking to him as though he was my friend. Everyone assumed I was talking to an imaginary friend but he exists, it's just for some reason only I can see him.

He ignored me completely for an unknown reason at the time. A week later my auntie died in a car crash and he disappeared until I saw him walking the streets.

Over time I grew wiser, ignoring him like he did me, as neither of us knew the real reason to why I could see him.

I'm now aged twenty-one, living out my life normally – well as normal as you can be considering that you see death himself.

The phone rang in my flat snapping my out of my dazed memories. I shuddered at the thought.

"Hello?" I answered. I smiled at the texture of my phone; it had been my friend's joke. She bought me it as my flat warming gift, custom made by her. I swear that girl is going to make it big.

"Hey baby," came the smooth voice of my boyfriend – Louis. My smile only widened further.

"Hey, what's up?" I asked.

"Nothing just wanted to make sure were still on for tonight?" he'd been planning this for ages, and he still hadn't told me exactly where we were going, I nodded in response then remembered that he couldn't see me.

"Absolutely, you gonna tell me where were going yet?"

"Nope," I groaned in frustration.

"OK, but at least tell me on what grounds of what to wear, I don't want to wear something dressy only to turn up in a forest or something." He laughed.

"Sweetheart you look good what ever you wear, so don't worry,"

"Fine, so I'll see you later?"

"Yeah, I'll pick you up at eight."

"OK bye,"

"Bye," I put the pink fluffy phone back down on the receiver, I was in my bedroom and the floor was still littered with boxes. My parent's had taken too kindly to me moving out, especially at such a 'tender age,' as they had put it.

I jumped up off my double bed to a knock at the door. feeling hyper I practically skipped over there. Ok so I admit my flat wasn't exactly big, it had one main bedroom and a small second one, just you know in case my friend needs some place to stay or something. Plus the rent was quite high so maybe someone will live with me at a later date. The living room was the biggest room I had and then there was the tiny bathroom and kitchen. The door was situated next to the kitchen and my bedroom was furthest away.

I pulled the door open revealing Sakura my all time best friend we've known each other through school, and she's the only class mate I've stayed in contact with over the years.

"Hey," we both greeted in union.

"You ready?" she asked daring a peak through into the untidy flat.

"Yes! I'm desperate to get away from the boxes please rescue me," I begged. She laughed.

"OK,"

"Let me just grab my bag," I went through to my front room, and took hold of my handbag off the second hand sofa. Locking the door behind us I went down the steps (I was on the top floor,) and followed Sakura over to her perfect new shinny green Minnie cooper. Urg I hated her. She still lived at home with her parent's but to be honest I don't blame her considering the house they own, its huge.

I got into the passenger side.

"So unpacking not going to well?" I smiled as she put the car into reverse and then first andheaded to the shopping centre retail therapy always works it wonders on me. She'd helped me moved some of my stuff over there in the first place.

"Meh – not bad but I just needed a break you know what I'm like with mess." She smiled and turned the radio up as our song came on. Queen 'don't stop me now,' began playing at full blast.

Parked up we got out the car and I headed for the entrance taking a deep breath I walked in. I usually avoided busy places when I could; it meant less chance for me to see Death. I honestly didn't know how he did it, I mean I once saw him in a supermarket got home and he'd have been on the streets.

Sakura didn't know about my curse nor did anyone else. Like I said I ignored him like he did me, I was even starting to question whether he could actually speak, or maybe he could only see those who were going to die.

Whatever I didn't care anymore. I always used to think there was a reason why I could see him, maybe to help people.

We went in and out shops for most of the day. Sakura had promised to help me find a good outfit for tonight.

We were sat at a table eating at a restaurant.

"So what did you think to the red top I got?" she asked.

"I told you in the shop it's gorgeous, I'd have got it myself if I wasn't skint" I sighed, that was the downside to living on your own. But there were a lot of bright sides too. "Why don't you borrow it tonight?" she offered.

"No way, I can't do that it's brand new you haven't even worn it yet." I argued.

"So, that's never stopped you before remember…" but I didn't hear the memory as a woman walked by pushing a pram with a baby in it. Holding onto the pram was a small boy of around five years old, and next to him unknown to all but me was Death. He hadn't changed over the years not one bit even his outfit was exactly the same black trousers, and a black tight fitting top. Complete with a set of black eyes filling most of the eyeball.

The boy would die within a week at the most. I wanted to cry but I'd seen it so many times before, sometimes even worse. I've tried to help people before, warning them to be safe and careful. I even followed this one girl around attempting to protect her, until her parent's called the police. It was always harder with the younger ones, their whole lives ahead of them.

"Are you even listening to me?" Sakura asked, I looked back up at her.

"sorry what did you say?"

"I said, do you want to borrow, it or not."

"Sure, if you really don't mind." She snorted.

"Hey that's what friends are for," she stood.

"Come on those shops are calling our names," I smiled and followed her.
