Author's Note: All right, first things first, in case you didn't notice in the summery, this is femslash, or a story about gay people. So if you are a homophobe I suggest you don't read this. Also, no flaming folks, this is my fist fic so have mercy. Helpful criticism, however, is more than welcome. Last thing and I cannot stress it enough! REVIEW!!!...pretty please
Disclaimer: The song "The Girl Next Door" unfortunatley does not belong to me but to Saving Jane, although I kinda tweaked the lyrics in places to make it fit the story more
She's Miss America
Chapter 1
Small town homecoming queen
She's the star in this scene
There's no way to deny she's lovely
Perfect skin, perfect hair
Perfumed hearts everywhere
Tell myself that inside she's ugly
Maybe I'm just jealous- but I can't bring myself to hate her
Secretly I wonder why the hell I want to date her
She is the prom queen, I'm in the marching band
She is a cheerleader, I'm sitting in the stands
She gets the top bunk, I'm sleeping on the floor
She's Miss America
And I'm just the girl next door
Always class president
She must be heaven sent
She was never the last one standing
A backseat debutante
Everything that you want
Never too harsh or too demanding
Maybe I'll admit it, I'm a little bitter
Everybody loves her, and I just wanna kiss her
She is the prom queen, I'm in the marching band
She is a cheerleader, I'm sitting in the stands
She gets the top bunk, I'm sleeping on the floor
She's Miss America
And I'm just the girl next door
"And then, around 1339 B.C, or B.C.E, which means BEFORE Common Era, the hominids MIGRATED to different areas of the world. Also around this time they made a very important discovery called TOOLS. Any questions? Good. Now after they invented TOOLS, hominids…."
I felt my eyes glaze over in boredom as a small puddle of drool began to accumulate on my desk. God, why does history have to be so damn boring! Okay, stupid question, but I mean, who wants to learn about migrating apes anyway? I lazily started to doodle in my art covered note-book. That's what I did when I was bored, doodle and pretend to pay attention. I was halfway through with my professionally drawn australopithecine that bore a close resemblance to our babbling history teacher when the door opened.
"Sorry I'm late, Mr. Stevens. I had a doctor's appointment," the newcomer said while briskly walking to her seat. It was Katherine Bell, homecoming queen, cheerleader, and most desired girl in the freshman class. Oh yea, did I mention she was hot?
"That is quite alright Miss Bell, just make sure you get the notes that you have missed."
"Thanks," Katherine said as she flashed him her professionally whitened teeth in a smile. God I loved that smile. I mean, who wouldn't? It was perfect. In fact, everything about her was perfect.
I know what you're thinking. Why do I, a female, think about Katherine, who is also happens to be female, that way? Well, the thing is, I'm bi. I guess I just love everybody. I have had a crush on Katherine for quite a while now, which is kinda sad because there's not a chance in hell of us ever being together. She's as straight as a line, not to mention the heartbreaker of the school. Besides me and Katherine aren't even friends. I mean, we know each other well enough, but when you go to a small preppy private school with only twenty-nine people in your grade, it's hard not to know everyone. We were more like acquaintances. One of my best buds was close to her, but unfortunately that's all the connections I had.
"Miss Porter, would you care to answer the question?" My head jerked up immediately at the sound of my name. Crap, I should have been listening more carefully.
Gulping, I timidly asked, "Sorry Sir, but…um…could you please repeat the question?"
"Please pay more attention, Porter, or I'm afraid you won't do so well on the test Wednesday." We have a test Wednesday! Wow, I really did need to pay more attention.
"Katherine! Tell me, where did the australopithecines live before they migrated?"
"Africa, Sir," she said with a voice of confidence. I glared at her with a mix of hate and admiration. It was an easy question; even I could have gotten it had I been more attentive. But there was just something the way Katherine said the answer that made it seem more…interesting I guess. She always answered with a kind of shy confidence, very intriguing if you ask me. O.K., I'm rambling. Focus Amanda, focus.
Twenty minutes the door burst open as I stumbled out into the hall. "Finally! That has got to be the longest damn class I have ever attended!" I said as I threw my arms in the air to emphasize my point. I was always the drama queen, constantly craving for attention.
"I have to say it was pretty boring, but then again, it's always boring. I don't see why you're making such a big deal over it." One of my friends, Christine, had caught up to me and was now reprimanding me on my antics. Christine was the bubbly soap-opera addicted member of my little click of friends. At times her hyperness was contagious, but other times she would bore you into a coma while describing every last detail of the last episodes of One Tree Hill. As you might have already guessed, she was a blonde.
"Yea well, I'm tired! It's been a long day and I'm just ready for the weekend!"
Christine looked over at me with an amused smirk smeared across her face, "Mandi, its Monday. Not to mention it's only lunch time."
"Which reminds me, I'm starving. Come on, hurry up," I called behind me as I rushed out down the hall towards the cafeteria. As I pushed through the double doors, I spotted a couple of my friends sitting at our usual table. After getting lunch, I walked over and joined them.
"Hiya guys," I greeted while plopping down my tray. A few 'Hi's and grunts acknowledged my arrival.
"Hey Manda," my pal Jane greeted me as she sat down beside me. Jane happened to be the friend of mine who was close with Katherine. I found this odd, because Jane and Katherine could not possibly be anymore unalike. While Katherine was a hot cheerleader prep, Jane was a sarcastic soccer jock and punk rock junkie, bordering on emo.
At that moment Katherine plunked her tray down directly across from me. I felt myself tense up and become conscious of things that hadn't bothered me until now, like how I had forgotten to brush my hair this morning or how I had gotten two servings of chocolate pudding. God, she must think I'm a pig.
"So Katherine," Jane said as she calmly started into her potatoes, "where's Carmen?" Carmen was Katherine's best friend, neither went anywhere without the other…most of the time. I was surprised that Katherine's red-headed friend wasn't with her.
"I'm not sure," Katherine looked around the lunch room, her enchanting…gosh that was cheesy…dark blue eyes scanning its inhabitants, "Last time I saw her was first period."
"I thought you two were joined at the hip," I said jokingly, causing a small smile to grace Katherine's lips. Yes, I made her smile! Score! I suddenly had to bite back my own giant smile.
For the rest of lunch I contented myself to simply drifting in and out of the conversation, too busy with my thoughts to pay much attention. I tried not to stare too much at Katherine, but it was rather challenging. I loved the way she would lean forward when she was engrossed in the conversation and her hair would gently fall onto her face. She would then carefully tuck the lose hair behind her left ear. I finally wrenched my eyes from her for fear of being caught.
"Hey, Amanda, you okay? You seem awful quite, which is extremely unusual for you." I looked up from my pudding to find all of my friends, and Katherine staring at me.
I swallowed some pudding, "Yea, I'm fine, just tired is all," I forced a smile. Jane looked unconvinced, but left it alone anyway. I was grateful.
The rest of the day passed quickly. Jane and I were out at soccer practice, passing to one another while the rest of the team ran drills. Even though we only sophomores, Jane and I were two of the three captains. We were the stars of the state champion team. I was the left forward while Jane played sweeper. In my junior high career, I had scored twenty-seven points in one season. Being captains and the top players, we were given the privilege of sitting out of some of the basic drills and practice on our own.
"Hey Jane!" the voice sounded from behind me and I turned my head out of curiosity. It turned out to be the wrong time to not pay attention to the ball, because the next thing I knew it felt as though someone punched me in the stomach as it slammed against me, leaving me breathless.
"Oh God, Manda I'm sooo sorry!" The sky seemed to be spinning above me when Jane's concerned face appeared above my own. I could have sworn that I saw stars.
"You okay?"
"Oooowwww. God, Jane, why do you have to hit so fucking hard?" I sat up rubbing my eyes before glaring at my worried friend. "I mean, the point is to pass it me, not kill me! I think you broke a rib." Of course she hadn't broken my rib, but I might as well make her feel a little guilty for nailing me so hard. Told you I was a drama queen.
"Hey, are you guys okay!" I looked over to see Katherine staring wide eyed in worry at me and Jane. She was breathing hard from the running over to us, I felt butterflies in my stomach…wait no, that would just be a large bruise developing.
"You guys? I was the one who just got nailed in the stomach!" I retorted icily, causing both Katherine and Jane to flinch slightly.
I'm really sorry…" Jane voice faded away and she stared at the ground guiltily.
"It's okay," I replied with a small sigh, "Besides, I feel better already!" I smiled as I quickly stood up, wincing with pain at the sudden movement. I couldn't act like a wimp now, with Katherine around.
"You sure you're fine?" Katherine asked.
"Never better," I said flashing her a smile, a special smile reserved just for her.
"I thought you just said your rib-"
"Never mind what I said, I'm fine…really," I glanced from Katherine to Jane as if daring them to question me again. So what if I felt like an eight-teen wheeler had crashed into my stomach? I wasn't about to show that I was weak in front of Katherine. Okay, so maybe I was exaggerating about the eight-teen wheeler thing, but it still hurt…some.
"Well, errr," Katherine's soft pristine voice shattered the silence, "The reason I came down here, to the field, was to ask if you wanted to come to the movies with Carmen and I tonight."
I opened my mouth to answer until I realized that she was talking to Jane, of course. Jane was actually her friend. I decided that I no longer fit into the conversation, and turned to leave.
"Amanda! Do you want to come?" My ears perked up at the sound of my name. I looked back at Jane and Katherine, both looking at me expectantly.
"What?"
"Do you want to come with us to the movies? The more the merrier," Katherine chirped at me, smiling expectantly. I simply stared, dumbfounded.
"Me? Well, err…s-sure…I mean..yea..I'll go," Jane raised her eyebrows in question of my new found stuttering problem. I felt my cheeks burn with embarrassment. God, I was an idiot. "Well, I gotta run." I turned on my heels and headed for the hills…or the girls locker rooms. I reached the building and leaned my head on the cool brick wall. Suddenly I felt a large smile overcome my entire face, spreading warmth across my entire body. I was going to the movies with Katherine Bell.
So whatcha think? Review and tell me! You know you want to.
