Background

by, Cassandra

Sitting in the background,
watching the crowds go by.
No one sees her, no one cares
about the girl sitting in the background.
She watches, she waits for someone
to notice her pain, to stop and help.
But they walk on by, don't seem to see
the broken girl sitting in the background.

Till, finally, someone sees
and stops to ask if she's okay.
She turns her head away,
mutters under her breath
"If I was crying out my heart
you would still ask if I'm okay.
If you really, truly cared,
you wouldn't even need to ask.
"
They roll their eyes and walk away,
leaving the girl sitting in the background.

Another spots her, and does their deed;
stop and drop a handful of coins in her hand.
As they walk away she throws them down
and laughs quietly to herself
"I'm sitting in the street so you
immediately assume I'm poor and in need.
If you really, truly cared,
you'd take the time to hear my side
."
They don't look back as they continue on their way,
leaving the girl sitting in the background.

Finally a boy, wearing a pair of torn jeans,
sits down next to her, nursing a blackened eye.
He never says a word, just sits and watches,
watching the crowds move on by.
She smile as they sit, keeping each other company.
She whispers in silence, not making a sound
"All I needed was someone to take the time
to sit with me and see what I see.
All I needed was for someone to come
and take me out of the background.
"
