This story has well over 170 reviews, and the best part is that none of them are flames! Keep reading no matter what. This ending is a real gut wrencher. I had a goof by accidentally making the last line said by Vincent from Quarantine. Also note how this ending nearly mirrors the dialogue in that story. Tee hee! Enjoy the exciting conclusion of The Drifter, which is now officially my best story…

Final Chapter

"The End"

Liona ran as fast as she could just to catch up. The Heartless was a few blocks down, and right now she was out of breath.

"No Leon, please don't get killed!" Liona said mentally.

The Heartless was rather quiet because one of the bloodiest gunfights the town had ever seen just happened on the floor. Brock had taken in a few gunshots, but he could only laugh his ass off because after the match he could sit down and smoke a victory cigarette.

"I can handle a few more. Send them at me bitches." Brock said before holding his hand up to his ear. "What's that? Bitches? You find this funny?"

Brock fired a few more shots at the pile of dead bodies before laughing again. The whole place was silenced, so all he could hope for was Leon's safety. As he pitched back while taking a drag, his eye sight got blurry.

"Fuck it dude." Brock said to himself as he tried to lift the gun to his head.

Upstairs, Leon and Saber both stood face to face with their weapons on the table. It wasn't expected for them to fight, but Leon knew well he wanted to kill Saber now—Saber knew that he had to kill him quick or he's see his demise. Leon rushed for the desk while Saber rushed at him. The two connected. Saber swung his fist up at Leon's face only to see it barely do anything. Leon took the blow into the face like it was nothing before clenching his fist and swinging it forwards at Saber. The impact sent a shock through his body that made Saber hack up some mucus. Leon lifted his right arm and came down with a punch that broke Saber's right eye socket.

Blood spurted from Saber's eye while the eye ball itself caved in. Saber fell into the table and tried to reach for the closest weapon which was the Beretta. Leon came down with his fist and struck Saber's left arm. The impact snapped the bone, but Saber clenched his teeth before taking the gun with his right hand. Leon grabbed the sword before throwing Saber's right arm aside. Doing so caused the gun to kick fire and hit the wall. Leon swung the sheathed blade up across Saber's bloody face. When it impacted, he quickly swung the sword as fast as he could to the right to unsheathe it. The sheath flew off into the window while Saber quickly brought to Beretta up to Leon.

Both weapons connected. Leon pushed Saber up against the table while coming down with both arms compared to Saber's good and bad arms. The blade approached the front of his neck slowly, so now the adrenaline began to kick in on Saber's end. As soon as the sharp razor touched his neck, it stopped before Leon felt himself being pushed back. Saber grinned as his teeth were exposed, but Leon only smiled back before jerking the sword out to the right. The blade ripped into the jugular vein on Saber's neck and the blood sprayed up towards Leon's face. Leon backed away and watched his dying opponent through his blood covered eyes. As he wiped the blood away, he saw the horrifying glimpse of the Beretta's muzzle lighting up in flames.

A bullet flew out and struck Leon directly on the top of his skull. Both fell to the ground. Saber slowly began to bleed while Leon felt himself fading out. His body went numb before both of his eyes began to get heavy.

"Wake up Leon." Leon said to himself as he felt the shock of the gunshot wound.

He released the sword before trying to sit up. The bullet made a clean headshot, but he was now barely able to move. After getting onto his side, his right arm went numb, and then he fell on his back again.

"Damn it… I came so close…" Leon said as he thought about Liona. "I don't want to die…"

Leon tried to get up, but he continued to fall back. Both of his eyes went shut while at the time all he could really focus on was his silent breathes of air. One breath at a time. Conscious slowly slipped away. He had to get back up because he still wanted to be back with Liona and his friend Brock again. Liona. She was the only one he could ever really want after Charlotte's death. Two breaths. Get up…

Downstairs, Brock tried to lift the gun up to his head, but he couldn't Liona ran into the front door before ducking for cover. Brock propped the M4 up to his knee before pointing it directly at Liona.

"Don't move or I'll blow your damn brains out." Brock said quickly.

"I only came here for Leon. If he's dead, you can gladly kill me after this." Liona said.

"Who are you?"

"My name is Liona. I guess that Leon and I are a couple now. So I wanted to see him."

"Leon's dead. I heard some shots, but it's been pretty quiet."

"No." Liona laughed to get the evil thoughts back. "You don't know Leon that well. He would walk right out of this. I want through."

"How do I know if your not an assassin or not?" Brock asked again.

"I've come to give him his vest back. Let me stand and I can show it to you." Liona said quickly.

Brock replied with a yes. Liona stood up slowly with the vest on. She held it open before turning around in a circle so Brock could get a good look.

"Shit… I guess it is true." Brock said before pitching back. "Before you go, please deliver the kill shot for me. I can't keep going."

"No, you'll be fine. I'll come and help you. Just give me a minute!" Liona exclaimed.

"Then what are you waiting for? Go get him."

Liona nodded with a tear in her eye. She quickly ran across the body covered dance floor before making her way upstairs. Each step felt like it took minutes, but surely enough the suspense kept building. The hallways were littered with corpses from where Leon and Brock had cleaned up. After getting to the top floor, she saw the door to Saber's officer—it brought back memories. After reaching it, she slowly opened the door to peek inside. It's clear. Liona swung the door open to the sight of blood. She glanced down to see Saber with a blue face from where his lungs had flooded out with blood. After going down further she saw the one sight that made her heart suck back into her chest. Leon still lay on the floor motionless along with the gaping hole on the top of his skull.

"Leon!" Liona quickly cried before running to his side. She shook him once with no response and rubbed some of the blood off his face. "Oh god Leon, why did you have to do that?"

Liona kneeled down to him before looking at her bloodstained hands. She shook him again before patting his face a few times. More crying ensued as it was obvious she wasn't ready to let go.

"Leon, we were going to take him out together! Getting killed here wasn't going to prove anything… Why did you have to get killed like this? You can't just up and give in like this!" Liona cried again before shaking him. "Get up…"

The next cry was choked before she dropped her hands to her side. Leon coughed before opening his left eye to her.

"Oh, nag-nag-nag…" Leon muttered.

The next few sad tears faded out before she quickly leaned down to hug him. Leon lifted his right arm to pat her on the back after coming together. Liona wiped the tears in her eyes off as she rubbed against his face with hers. There was laughter, tears, and most of all relief.

"Leon, I thought you died on me!" Liona exclaimed.

"I took a bullet to the head…" Leon said as he tried to sit up.

"It doesn't matter how you got out of that one. I'm just glad you got out of it!" Liona said before leaning her head on him.

"Charlotte…" Leon whispered.

"What?" Liona asked.

"It's nothing… Nothing." Leon said after rubbing the head wound.

It was a clean graze right across the top of the skull, which really surprised him because the barrel of the gun was pointing right at his head. Was it divine intervention from above? Was it Charlotte? Still wounded, the young Drifter managed to stand up before grabbing the Berettas from off the ground.

"Give me one second…" Leon said as he coked the guns and walked over to Saber's corpse.

He immediately fired a burst into Saber's body and head that was so large it took up all the ammo in the guns. Liona squinted her eyes as she watched Leon waste away at his nemesis. Leon dropped the guns before walking over to the desk to grab the notebook. Liona walked towards him as he reached for it, but he quickly thought of it again. Instead of grabbing it, he just left Charlotte's painful legacy there.

"Just making sure he doesn't get back up…" Leon said before putting his arm around Liona. "Let's get out of here. I'm really tired."

"Same here. Brock's still down stairs." Liona said as they walked away.

"Thank you Charlotte." Leon muttered before stepping out of the room and leaving the dark beaten past behind him for good.

Closing song

"Across the universe"

Performed By The Beatles

As sung by John Lennon

Words are flowing off like endless rain into a paper cup
They slither wildly as they slip away, across the universe
Fools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my open mind
Possessing and caressing me.

Jai Guru Deva Ohm
Nothings gonna change my world
Nothings gonna change my world
Nothings gonna change my world
Nothings gonna change my world

Images of broken light which
Dance before me like a million eyes
They call me on and on across the universe
Thoughts meander like a
Restless wind inside a letter box
They tumble blindly as
They make their way across the universe

Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Sounds of laughter shades of life
Are ringing through my opened ears
Exciting and inviting me
Limitless undying love which

Limitless undying love which
Shines around me like a million suns
And calls me on and on across the universe

Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
