Crazy Strawberries

By Autumn Queen

"Strawberries my dear?" asked an old woman.

"No thanks," replied Hollie, "I'm…allergic."

"Oh, well, that's too bad," the old woman walked off and left the strawberries sitting on the table.

Hollie grabbed a few potato chips, some salsa, and some cheese from the buffet to fill up her tray. She gave the strawberries an evil glare then she sat down at an open table. She had been invited to this party, but she didn't really know anyone here. She knew the people who were putting on the party; they were her next-door neighbours. Yet, she didn't even know the cause for celebration, let alone any of the other invites. Just when Hollie was considering leaving, a man showed up.

"Excuse me, but may I sit here? Everywhere else is full," he asked.

Hollie looked around the venue, and sure enough, everywhere else was full. "Sure," she replied, "go ahead."

"Thank you so much," he said while he extended his hand, "I'm Daemyn."

"Hollie," she shook his outstretched hand.

They exchanged "nice to meet you"'s and then Daemyn took a seat directly across from Hollie at the rectangular table. They both sat in silence munching on their food despite all the chatter that was commencing at other tables. They sat that way for quite a while until Daemyn started chewing on some strawberries that he had put on his plate. Hollie stared at the strawberries with extreme dislike, but Daemyn caught the look on her face and her direction of vision.

"What do you have against strawberries?" he questioned curiously.

"Oh, nothing really. I'm just allergic to them," she shrugged and averted her eyes.

Daemyn bent down to try and catch her eye, and she looked up. They locked eyes and Daemyn did a quick scan of her eyes. To his surprise, Daemyn discovered that Hollie was lying about being allergic to strawberries.

"No you're not," he stated simply.

"What?" Hollie was startled. No one had ever challenged her excuse before.

"You heard me," he replied.

After a while, Hollie caved. "Alright," she confessed, "I'm not allergic to strawberries. But I do have a reaction to them whenever I eat them."

"Like what?" he prompted.

"I…forget things," she admitted, "I've had memory related reactions to strawberries ever since I tried my first strawberry when I was 4. But the last time that I had strawberries, I forgot what my name was and where I lived. That was about 10 years ago. I haven't eaten strawberries since then."

"That's…interesting," was his reply, "It's been 10 years, so I don't think they could do any damage now. What to try some?"

"Well, I guess if you say it couldn't do any damage now, then I guess it's alright." She grabbed a strawberry from Daemyn's outstretched hand and popped it into her mouth.

After 10 minutes, Daemyn asked, "So, how are you feeling?"

"I'm feeling great," she smiled, "and you are…?"

"Oh no!" he said, "you did forget!"

"You forgot. You said that when you eat strawberries you forget things," he shook her, "come on, you've got to remember!"

"Hey! Get off me!" She yelled and took off across the room.

"No! Wait!" He called after Hollie, afraid that she might hurt herself.

"Quit following me!" Hollie screamed as she attempted to avoid the strange man.

"I'm trying to help you," Daemyn said desperately.

"No you're not! I don't even know you!" she shrieked as she picked up a knife from the buffet and pierced Daemyn's heart.

Daemyn fell to the floor into a pool of his own blood with a gasp. His last dying thought was, crazy strawberries.

People all around started screaming and running in a desperate panic. Someone even decided to pull the fire alarm to alert everyone. The ceiling sprinklers came on and poured water down on top of everyone. Hollie noticed that there were some strawberries on the buffet table. Hmm, she thought to herself, I don't remember ever having strawberries before in my life. Maybe I should try some.

She grabbed a handful of strawberries and put them in her mouth and started eating them. Hollie walked around the raining room while eating strawberries until she came across a mirror. She saw a strange unfamiliar creature staring at her from the frozen water. But she did notice that what ever happened on her side, would happen on the other side as well. So she plunged the stained knife into her own chest to be rid of the creature.
