Amy slammed the books closed, put them all back, sighed deeply, and headed upstairs to go to school.

That day seemed to crawl by, Amy paid every distraction equal attention and almost fell asleep twice. Most people in her class weren't very fond of her. They all thought that she thought that she was better than them because she was the richest girl in town and wouldn't associate with them, when it was really because they all supported slavery. She often stayed close to her brother for this reason, he was like her protector, her big brute protector. Almost every girl had a crush on Joshua. He was well built, strong, and quite handsome. He had not taken interest in any girl in particular however, so everyone would just have to wait.

After the long day, Amy decided to go home alone because she was feeling extremely exhausted. On the way, she saw a white woman being beat by three black men. They were jeering at her, dragging her around, telling her to pick up the groceries they continually tossed further and further away from her. This was a common sight in town, no one ever stopped any of the people, so the behavior continued. Amy couldn't bear to watch as one man pulled out a whip. She began to run and was jerked back by a strong arm. One of the men had seen her and was pulling her towards the scene. She tried to cover her eyes, but he held her hands behind her back and forced her to watch along with one other man who held her eyes open. It was awful, the screams, the tears, the blood, the sweat, the bruises, and worst of all, the scars to come. The poor woman squirmed and thrashed, but could not escape. Then, as quickly as it had started, it stopped. The men released Amy, pushed the woman aside, and took her groceries for themselves. After they had gone, Amy hurried over to the woman, knowing she could do nothing to help her. The woman only whimpered and moaned in jibberish, so Amy held her until she closed her eyes for good. Then some men came by and took her away. Her blood still stained Amy's dress, this whole incident left a mark in Amy's mind that would never go away. She was reliving some of the things she had read about earlier. She began to feel sick, and before she could stop herself, she began to vomit. Joshua saw her and ran over.
"Geez, Amy! Come on, let's get you home."
Joshua picked her up off her feet, cradled her like a baby, and carried her home. That was all Amy could remember before it all went blank and she awoke the next mornnig in her bed, safe and sound, with a moist towl on her forehead and the sunlight streaming in through her window.
