UNCERTAIN PATRIOT

The pounding of the stead drums guide my steps and lift my feet
Beating that's supposed to lift my heart,
Drains my eyes 'till they are dull
I am on my own,
Yet I'm not alone as I go off to the fields to meet.
My end,
To meet my finish that those drums don't lull

To this day the sun does rise and fills the sky with songs of war
My arms grow heavy tossing my survival
From arm to arm, trying to keep hope
Over the horizon,
Across the field to my death, my death does loom
No one asked if I wanted to go,
No one asked if my family could cope

My thoughts are clouded and grey, knowing yet so lost
A numbing sensation filling my body
Not letting me feel my last
The drumming continues
Pulling us on with no thought of the cost
Men around me tremble and I with them
Hoping this will pass

My ears ring with the fresh sound of the loud cannons of nearby
The earth trembles and shakes
With the cool feel of impending battle
Loud shots from guns echo near
Soldier fall with a tragic sigh
In sad realization
My mind sees us as those herded like cattle

I'm scared now, the time has finally come and my heart chills to the bone
The bullets with on by
As I wait for one to hit its mark
This day of terrible horror
The sun does brightly shone
So many men are dying 'round
Their eyes forever dark

My comrade falls, my commander falls, what more I ask is left to fight for
Forward we march
"Press onward," I hear and force my feet to obey
The ground is red
No longer the green and stained that red forever more
So many are dead
Nothing can change it and it is hear to stay

Tis my end, I feel it creep upon me so soft and fearful
My body so numb
The pain leaves and hits straight to my soul
I see feet rush by
As they step across my careful
It's over
It has finally happened, my body has gone cold

The pounding of the steady drums guide my steps and lift my feet
Beating that's supposed to life my heart
Drains my eyes until they're dull
I am on my own
Yet not alone as I go off to the fields and meet
My end
To meet my finish that those drums don't lull

To the day the sun does rise and fills the sky with sounds of doom
A numbing sensation filling my body
Not letting me feel my last
Over the horizon
Across the field, to my death, my death does loom
Men around me tremble
And I with them, hoping this will pass

Alas
A marker marks the awkward truth forever written
That one
That day
It was indeed my last
Ne'er more to see the only face
The face of whom I was smitten
But I did not die alone
No
I am here among the mass
