A Restless Halt

Restless spies patter across the yucca dotted landscape,

Criers stand at the gates of a dozen thresholds,

Letting loose the warning bell chirp that fills the air,

As if from a fallen bird, lost in the dust.

The most sophisticated codes of any living animal,

It is far more than a birdcall that springs through the silence.

They wait like a skittish army halted for orders,

While the agents gather intelligence,

While the daredevils dash desperately across foreign streets,

Heedless to the danger of the enormous metal monsters

That prowl hungrily on the asphalt rivers

Giving up their lives for family and country.

Who are these robust, grizzled heroes?

Your friends beneath your feet, Cynomys ludovicianus.
