"What did you say, little girl?" Damien asked in that cold tone of his. If ever he was, at the very least surprised, he did not show any kind of emotion and maintained a poker expression on his face.
"I said that I love you. And I'm not a little girl anymore." Kayleigh replied, looking at him straight in the eye. She tried to look confident, yet her hazel eyes somehow betrayed her and showed the fear and uncertainty she felt at that very moment. There was no doubt that she gave this confession of hers some thought, and she mustered up all her courage just to do this yet her legs couldn't help but shake a little bit due to anxiety.
Damien turned away and remained quiet. He did not react to her previous statement, and it caused Kayleigh to panic as several thoughts ran through her mind. Still, she struggled to maintain her "calm" composure.
"I wonder...I wonder if he'd believe me this time and actually listen to me for once instead of just shoving me away like he always does" she thought to herself as she saw his short, chocolate brown hair being blown by the breeze. She stared at his profile for awhile, waiting for him to say something. Yet the awkward silence was killing her, and she knew that one of them had to break it.
"I-" she decided that she would be the one to speak up first yet Damien suddenly interrupted her.
"I don't care about you, little girl. You mean nothing to me."
"W-what?" His words ran through her ears and kept repeating themselves like some kind of a broken record. "I don't mean anything to him? This isn't true...he's lying. This isn't true!"
"I said I don't care about you. Can't you understand?" Damien said, sounding irritated.
"You're lying." Kayleigh couldn't believe what she was hearing. "He's lying. He has to be." Her voice was quivering and tears filled up her eyes, threatening to come out any time soon. "You're bluffing. You're just kidding, right? This is one of those corny jokes of yours! Damien, what you said was some kind of mistake, a joke...right?" she was crying now and she sounded like she was pleading for him to take his words back. "Tell me its not true!"
"Just shut up, little girl!" Damien's bangs covered his eyes and though Kayleigh hadn't seen it, a teardrop fell from his turquoise green eyes. "You mean nothing to me, you know that? You're just a little girl who is nothing but a nuisance to me! Now run along now and go to your other friends so you can leave me alone!" He was now angry and he could barely contain the frustration that he felt inside him. What was worse was that the hurt and the pain that he felt tortured him endlessly.
Kayleigh, overwhelmed by the pain that she felt and unable to digest all of that information, fell to her knees and caused the gray pavement to be stained with her tears.
Damien, on the other hand, felt like his heart was slowly being torn into pieces as he heard the girl he loved sob behind him. For a split second, he felt uncertain about whether or not what he did was the right thing to do as an image of the crying brunette flashed in his mind. But then he remembered why he had to do this.
"This is for your own good Kayleigh" he thought to himself as he started walking, walking away from her fragile form. "That's right. Remember the heart wrenching pain that I have caused you every time you cry for me. Hate me. Despise me, and never search for me again. Forget about me and go on with your life."
He suddenly found himself weeping, one way or another, and he wiped the tears with the back of his right hand. "I don't want you to look into a darkness that you don't have to see, Kayleigh. I want you to be happy and to enjoy yourself. I don't want you to get hurt and experience all that pain that I've went through all my life. I don't want you to get yourself into something that you'll regret later on. "
When was certain that he was far away, enough for her not to be able to see him, he stopped and took a glance behind him. Then he continued to walk away into the unknown darkness he was yet to see. "I don't want you to play with fire."
