He stood at the door, between the man outside and the two people inside: a small girl and another boy his age. The girl was crying softly as the boy held her.
"You can't come in. Leave us alone," he ordered. The man outside glared at him, then turned away.
"So be it."
"The police know, you know. They'll be looking for you." The man stopped sharply at this revelation, his nostrils flaring in anger. Finally, he grit his teeth and continued to leave.
"So be it." The boy inside relaxed slightly.
He wasn't sure where this really started, and how it got to this moment. Maybe it was when Mei was born, six years before, or maybe it was when he finally escaped with her to England. And, in some way, it had begun when he met Keith. That was a beginning of sorts, but not really the one he was looking for. Mei's birth. He would start there.
