Chapter 1
A Principal With Eyes Like Gold
Kicking and screaming was not working, but if this man insisted on carrying her away thrown over his shoulder she was not going to go quietly. She pounded on his back and kicked her legs, hoping she would get him in a certain area below the waist, but the man just held on to her tightly and whistled like he was not carrying a struggling girl on his back.
Jenna could not believe she had been caught by the janitor. At least she thought he was the janitor. He sure looked like one, with his simple grey overalls and dirty mop in his left hand. He seemed to be an ordinary middle aged man with stringy graying hair, and no sign of any physical strength in the least, he actually looked kind of scrawny, but somehow he had picked up Jenna as if she weighed nothing and was treating her kicks and punches as if they were from a toddler.
"Listen to me, you old fart!" she screamed about the thousandth time. "I tell you I don't belong to this stupid school, so put me down!"
"Well missy, you're wearing the stupid uniform, so even an old geezer like me can put two and two together. You wear the uniform, you belong to the school."
Jenna gave an exasperated scream and let her body hang limply over his shoulder. In frustration, she gave him one more half-hearted thump in the back with the back pack dangling from her hand, but finally gave up and tried to gather her thoughts.
She was tired and confused. She had woken up in the middle of a garden of flowers, wearing a uniform of a short blue skirt, white blouse and a yellow tie. And slung over her shoulder was a small blue back pack, which was slightly bulky indicating there was something inside. Just when she was about to investigate the bags contents, the old man had arrived, threw her over his shoulder like an old sack and told her she should be in class, so he was taking her to the principal's office to be punished. Every time she had tried to protest he had said the same thing, and continued to carry her away.
Why does this world keep putting me in such horrible situations? It had been a month since she realized she could come to this world, and each time had been one danger after the next. She had barely gotten away with her skin. Well, I guess I should be glad that it's not mermaids trying to drown me this time. Jenna shuddered in memory of her last adventure.
The man carried her through a double door and she found that they were in a long hallway filled with rows of many lockers on either side. It looked exactly like the halls in her high school back home. It was all so ordinary and realistic, but it made her feel uneasy. She might not be too familiar with this world, but one thing she learned was that nothing was ever what it seemed here, and the more ordinary it looked the weirder it was. And her suspicions were confirmed when she eventually saw the principal.
The old man had walked casually through a door marked "office" in bold black letters, which lead to a rather empty room with a worn couch, a desk piled high with papers and some withered plants near a dusty window that only allowed a dim light to filter through. Behind the desk was a bony little secretary who had her hair in a tight bun and narrow glasses resting on the tip of her nose. She was filing her nails idly, completely ignoring the huge piles of papers on the desk, and every once and while she would blow a large pink bubble with her bubble gum. When the old man entered carrying Jenna, the secretary looked up and did not even bat an eyelash at the odd fact that the man was carrying a young girl over his shoulder. She just observed them through sleepy eyes and snapped her bubble gum loudly.
"Whadda ya want?" she asked, not showing any sign that she really cared.
"I want to see the principal. It seems this here girl, was skipping class. I found her lying in the flower garden instead of being in class." the old man stated.
The secretary blinked her small brown eyes at Jenna as if seeing her for the first time. "Whatever." she said finally waving her hand dismissively. "Go right in." And she resumed filing her nails as if nothing happened.
Wow, Jenna thought as the janitor carried her away, it really is hard to find good help.
The principal's office was small and dark, the only window was covered in a blind which only allowed a little light through. When her eyes got used to the dimness, Jenna could make out a desk with a few papers and a coffee mug on its surface, a large file cabinet to the right and a blue flag with she guess had the school sign on it. The whole room reminded her of the principal's office back home, but the only thing missing was…the principal.
Jenna gave a start when she heard a low growl come from the darkest corner of the office. It was a lucky thing she had come across many strange and unusual things in this world already or she would have screamed her head off. A pair of gold eyes appeared in the darkness and another growl, this time louder, filled the silence. There was obviously some sort of creature there with what she thought looked like claws protruding from its arms. She wondered why the old man was not running for his life. He was just standing there calmly looking at the pair of fierce gold eyes that were practically boring into them.
"There you are sir." The old man said simply and dropped Jenna roughly into a chair in front of the desk. "I gotta another troublemaker here for ya."
Jenna stared in horror as the creature began to move through the shadows. The eyes disappeared and she heard a great roar that sounded strangely beast-like, but human at the same time. Finally the noise stopped abruptly and a tall man in a blue suit stepped out of the shadow into the light. He cracked his neck and adjusted his suit and tie before lifting his eyes and aiming a friendly smile at her
"So Louis, what is this all about?" The new man's voice was light and pleasant. He sat down behind his desk, never ceasing to smile at Jenna, and waited expectantly for an answer from the old man.
Jenna could only stare with her eyes wide and her mouth hanging open. What the hell just happened? Was this guy just some sort of monster?
It was hard to believe. He looked like a normal guy, probably in his thirties maybe. His suit was wrinkle free and his light brown hair was neatly slicked back so not a hair was out of place. There seemed nothing out of the ordinary about him, but Jenna immediately noticed his eyes. They were a sinister amber, but for some reason every time she tried to look at them so she could study them further she found that she could not stare at them directly. Her gaze always seemed to slide off.
He had every characteristic of any high school principal, and therefore Jenna felt herself fidgeting and staring at the ground nervously under his gaze as the old man explained where he found her. The principal only smiled and nodded as he listened to the old man, but Jenna could feel those gold eyes penetrating her. He was not just observing her he was striping her down to her very soul, assessing exactly who and what she was, and she felt strangely violated. She wondered if he would figure out that she was not of from his world.
"Thank you Lou," the principal said gently when the man had finished. "You may go now." The old man nodded and walked out the office door with his mop slung over his shoulder. Jenna scowled after the man darkly until she heard the principal talking to her.
"Well, well young lady, don't you know you are supposed to be in class?" He spoke to her in a condescending tone. "Or did you think that sleeping in the garden was much more fun?"
Jenna could not help glaring, but it just grazed off him again and she found herself staring at the ground. "I don't belong to this school." she whined pitifully, as she kicked her foot absently against the chair leg. What is wrong with me? I'm acting like a little kid.
"I see. Where is it you really belong then?" He sounded intrigued, and once again gave her a penetrating look that seemed more menacing this time. Jenna could practically feel claws fiercely ripping through her to get to her innermost thoughts, and she immediately felt icy fingers of fear getting a firm grip on her heart. This time he locked his eyes with hers and she found she could not look away. She felt petrified under his gaze and slowly shrunk in her seat. Somehow she knew that she could not let this man know anything about her or something horrible would happen. She did not think lying would help, because she was sure he would see right through it, but she had to get away from him quickly.
Just when she was about to get up and throw the desk over and make a run for it, she heard the door open and someone entered. The spell was broken as the principal's eyes shifted to whoever had come in behind her and the cheery smile returned to his lips.
"Ah Jack, you have returned. I assume you are prepared for your assignment?"
