When the Night Befalls You
By Talon Tearine

Boy: Sweet Lullaby…
A melody that is so sweet
Hums with a warming aura
I watched through the gap
I listened outside the door
A woman with a gentle smile
Strokes the hair of her son
Her songs used to go on
Until the child fell asleep
But now she stops whenever
The last word has been sung
I listened as she sung
Hoping that it will go on
And on…
And on…

Boy: Her Requiem…
I can't seem to block out the sounds
Whenever she sings her songs
They never seem to reach an end
Her words keeping going on and on
I wish she'd stop saying those words
Stop singing me her mournful story
I can't do anything about it
I lay hear and close my eyes
She used to always stop when I sleep
But now she's seems to keep going
Someone please stop her singing
Take her away from this tiny room
I glanced towards the doorway
I wish I could stand up and leave…
I don't want to hear anymore
No more of this mournful song

Woman: The Dream…
Every night she follows the same routine
My eyes would trace her every movement
Her nightgown flutters as she flies
As she drifts down the halls quietly
Gently, she opens the door to the room
Enters and sits by the boy's bedside
Like a dream, she is so beautiful
While she watches over her son,
The moonlight shimmers in her eyes
Just like the dancing flame upon the candle
As if too afraid to awaken her sleeping young
She gently strokes his nest of brown hair
When she is certain that her child will not stir
With trembling hands, she lifts her candle
And flies like an owl out of the room
Fleeting just like a night's pretty dream

Boy: Her Nightmare
Why does she come to me like this?
With such a terrifyingly gentle approach
Always, always, always, she comes
When I feel cold she'd tuck me in
But I'd feel no warmer
Looking up at her face I feel colder
It's like a curse the way she lives
Always coming but then fleeing
Moonlight pools in her eyes, then falls
Moonlight falls, shimmering, like rivers
I want to reach out for her
I want to hold her close
Tell her that the night is still young

Boy: Jealousy
Why does she always come to this room?
Doesn't she ever notice me watching?
I stand here by the door while she walks by
Never sparing me a single look
Always to that child, always to that boy
A boy that will ever only see that room
Will never see anything beyond that room

Woman: Loneliness
I know that there is someone else there
Standing and waiting to be accepted
I want to help that someone
But nothing can be done with her
She comes to me to check my sleep
Comes with her songs and her time
How much longer will I endure this?
There is someone waiting and wanting
But I take all of what they want
I want to say sorry to that person
But at the same time, I do not
It's a problem that I keep alone…
From when night falls til the day rises

Woman: When the night comes…
I stand at the door and peer inside
The room which is filled with memories
Times of joy and times of sadness
All of them kept and stored right here
It is an image which I see every night
To remember my one and only son
I imagine what I must have been like
When I came to see my child to bed
My joyful songs have turned to grief
When my heart remembers of the pain
It was a while ago, a long while ago
When I had come to sing the last time
His eyes closed and he never woke
Always sleeping from then onwards
He haunts these walls,
His spirit shall always remain here
By night, my body becomes his mother
By night, I can only watch myself
And so I continue to sing my lullabies…

This is a short story that I wrote a while ago... It requires some thought
to make out what's happening and to also make up your own conclusions
about what happened. I hope you enjoyed it... or hated it with a passion.
