Prologue
I twirled my long brown hair on my finger as I stared at him. Yes, I know, childish from a seventeen-year-old. He just looked at me and smiled.
"It's going to be okay, you know?" he said.
"I have no doubts. It's just…" I sighed.
"I know. I'm scared too, Rhapsody," he said and gave a slight smile. "It'll all work out in the end."
"It has to," I said and had now moved on to tapping my feet to the rhythm of the radio instead of twirling my hair. "I just never wanted to make this car ride."
"Honestly, neither did I. But don't worry, okay? I mean, if you worry, I'm going to have to come all the way back to Stars Mountain," he laughed.
"Come on, our small town isn't that bad," I cranked my body around to look out the back window. "You can still see the mountains, but they're really small."
"Where I'm going, there will be no mountains; I guess I'll miss that part," he had one elbow leaning against the side of his car and his head resting in his hand. He looked stressed.
"Hey! You're going to miss something else in Stars Mountain too, you know!" I laughed.
"Oh yeah…maybe you," he smirked.
"Uh huh, you better," I said as I threw my arm around his muscular arm. A couple minutes passed. I was staring into possibly the most beautiful pair of eyes which were also fixed on my brown ones. He started rubbing his chin over with his thumb which immediately gave me the impression that something was up.
"What's wrong?" I asked sympathetically.
He gave a long exhale. "I cannot believe I won't get to see you everyday."
I could tell there was more, but I waited patiently. He was the kind of guy that needed time.
"What am I going to do without those eyes, and that hair, and…" he took his right arm and stroked my face and the ran his hand threw my hair. "I'm going to miss you Rhapsody."
"I'm going to miss you too," I said while intently looking into his eyes.
"No, I'm really going to miss you. It's not going to be the same, no matter how many times we say it's going to be the same, it's not. It's not." He clenched his fist and hit it against the dashboard. "Dang it, why do I have to leave you?" he shouted.
Now, I can't say that I wasn't worried, because I was. And I can't say that I was acting calm during all of this, because I would have said the same things if he didn't. But, here I was, trying to be the rock of the relationship. I owed him, because he was our rock at all the hard times in the past. So, I stayed calm.
"It's going to be okay. You think distance can break up what we have? No no, this relationship could put a million miles between us and we could still hold on because we're strong. It's never easy, but we can't let the rest of the world win." I looked at him waiting for his expression.
"You're right. You and I, we've got the chemistry to make the earth implode," he laughed.
And now that I had cheered him up just a little bit, I had to let my guard down too.
"But I'm going to miss you more than any girl in a sappy romance book," I said sharply. He picked up my hand and kissed it, taking his eyes off of the road for a couple seconds.
"We're going to make it," he said, seeming to dose off into the blue sky.
"I know," I said and he twisted his head to look at me once again. I blushed a little when we made eye contact. Even after being around him for so long, I never got that initial feeling leave me. And I knew he felt the same. So here we were, two kids driving down a dusty dirt road in Colorado. I was sitting on the passenger's side as the love of my life gripped the steering wheel.
