Shadows

Never knew such irony

Since their birth

As you smiled from my left

Such memorable successions

Numbness

Never experienced such paradox

Since it was remembered

As your shoulder shifted

Such a forgettable movement

As I forget myself—

(the absence of feeling)

As shade forgets itself—

(the absence of color)

Nerves alive as synapses quicken

In newfound dance

Of tingles, shudders, leaps

Up and down

Once-sober spines

Gloom alive and roiling

Sharp contrasts

To the fiery black palette

That clings

To chisel chinks of gold-green-blue

Moments later

We forget each other

And remember ourselves

To the cacophony of a blank silence
