I was in a bit of a hurry to get the story started and at such a loss as to how I should start it that the first chapter is rather short, and is more or less simply there to provide forward momentum, however minimal.
The rating is a precautionary measure, as I don't know how "adult themed" it might be considered. Also, I wanted to leave myself a bit of room to revamp and revise in the future once I get the pace of the story moving as I would like it.
Chapter 1
It all started as a game, something to pass the restless time that lingered reluctantly between dusk and dawn. Demetrius watched from his perch atop the ruined chapel, watching a timid looking girl walk with a brisk pace to the street corner and turn. He would jump down, his motions liquid and flowing like icy river water, and creep after his quarry silently. Tonight his senses tingled with anticipation as his mind traced the multitude of paths the girl could travel to reach her destination.
Demetrius smiled to himself as he watched the girl's hair bounce about her shoulders. He'd seen it every time he'd followed her to the driveway of her parent's house or to the track at the local high school. She kept it long, he liked that, and she always let it fly behind her rather than pinning it up tightly on her head.
The girl glanced around her quickly as she hastened down the debris strewn sidewalk. She shivered slightly in the chilled autumn air, pulling her coat tighter around her, and began to walk faster. Demetrius quickened his pace to keep up, his steps as silent as they had ever been.
His next steps were cautious, as the girl slowed her pace to more a gentle stroll than a brisk half jog. Demetrius swore silently as his sensitive ears caught the slight change in the girl's breathing. He looked about quickly and growled inaudibly; there was nowhere for him to hide.
The girl stopped suddenly, the toes of her shoes hanging over the bend in the sidewalk before she turned to face what she knew was following her. Her breath caught in her throat as she caught sight of her stalker.
