Gates of Paradise

Prologue

"And the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil."

The sunlight glittered tantalizingly off of its ruby skin, mesmerizing her while the serpent's voice, cool and seductive, urged her. "Bite it," he whispered, perching on her shoulder. "The possession of knowledge equal to that of the higher beings, the knowledge of what lays beyond the Garden, beyond the angels, beyond God, Himself, all achieved in one single bite. What is stopping you? God's dictum that you not taste the fruit he covetously prohibits you to taste, yet cruelly dangles before you?"

She cupped the apple in her hands gently, as she would a treasured gift, her eyes briefly darting from the shine on its red curve to glance at the creature perched on her shoulder with its tale wrapped sensually around her neck, stroking her with his silky skin, making her shudder with desire.

She slowly brought the apple level with her eyes, emeralds glittering with anticipation. One hand went to stroke the serpent's back as the other brought the apple to her quivering mouth. Her teeth broke the skin, and she felt as though an explosion took place in her mind, dazing her.

Stars shone brilliantly in her eyes as a strong but gentle wind curled around her enraptured form, birds' songs echoed in her ears, and planets were born before her very eyes. She was everything, the sky, the grass, the earth beneath her feet. Time stood still as the very essence of existence thundered in her mind as a tempest sea, bombarding her with all she had not known.

The spell broke and she stood, hunched over, gasping for air, a smile of ecstasy on her face. The serpent watched, forgotten, as she rushed towards the man, offering the piece of fruit. He watched with covetous eyes as the man took the apple suspiciously from her, yet bit into it, just the same, freezing, as she had, his eyes glazed as he experienced the rapture she had basked in moments before.

Lightning flashed and the sky darkened, frightening the two lovers.

"What have we done?" the man whispered, clutching the woman tightly to him. Looking down, his eyes widened as he now knew they wore no clothes. Hastily, he led her through a willow's curtain-like draping branches and pulled her to him, kissing her forehead, looking fearfully at the sky.

Alex woke, gasping, her heart still pounding from the dream she had just had. She could still see the man's dark brown eyes as they looked fearfully into hers, and could still feel his large hands wrapped around her arms, holding her closely as something terrible closed in on them.

Clasping a hand over her eyes, she shuddered, still able to hear the deep voice thunder, "And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: Therefore the Lord God sent them forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence they were taken."

Ok, guys, please, tell me what you think. Though this isn't my first attempt at a story, it's the first one I've posted. I'm going to try my hardest to keep it up because this idea has really got my brain in an iron grip, but updates might not occur too often, as school is starting and I'm in some crazy classes.
