Palace of Dreams

It started out as a walk through the woods. I clear sunny day. Then the sun was gone, it was semi-dark and the trees were looking eerie. I heard a howl somewhere to my right. My breathing became heavy and I walked at a faster pace. I kept this up until the sound of paws hitting the ground became apparent, so I ran for my life. It started raining when I took the first step of my run. 'What luck' I thought, but I ran faster. I ran through the dense wood, still on a path that was just visible in the semi-darkness and the heavy rain. I ran and ran, suddenly the trees thinned out, the rain stopped. I ran still, frightened of the wolves following me. The sound of the wolves' paws had faded. They had given up the chase. The sun became bright again and I stood in front of the huge palace. I was soaking wet and exhausted from all the running so I clambered up the dozen or so stairs and pushed open the door to the palace and stumbled onto a glistening marble floor. After a few minutes I regained my energy and stood up to examine where I had sought my refuge.

The palace was huge and bright. I felt put of place in my old denim jeans and tank top. This place was fit for queens and kings from the 17th century. The inside furniture was luxurious padded couches with gold, silver and pearl colours, and walls and ceiling lined with portraits from the aforementioned period. I stood amazed dripping with water, not feeling the cold because I was so preoccupied.

"Can I help you with anything, mademoiselle?" A butler asked

"Umm, well, I think I'm lost. I was walking through the forest and some wolves chased..." I started

"Chased you and suddenly you found yourself in my Palace?" a regal-looking man said to me coming down the main staircase, with a smirk upon his face.

"Erm, yes... Err, how did you know that?" I asked nervously

"Well," He started, "That is another story. Come in, come in. Henry, can you please get our guest some dry clothing. I do not want her catching anything."

"Oui, monsieur." Henry bowed and left immediately.

"My name is Louis-Joseph-Xavier-François, but you may call me Joseph." Joseph bowed and offered his hand.

"I'm Amelia Hanover. Umm.. Where am I?"

"You are in the Palace of Dreams, my fair lady."

Joseph lead me up stairs to a bedroom, women's clothes were laid out on the bed.

"This shall be your room. These are your clothes." Joseph then left me to change with some maids.

"Joseph, I cannot stay here! I have to get back to my home!" I pleaded with him.

"I'm sorry, I cannot do that. I wish I could, but since you have come here you can never go back. It just so happens that I promised that the next person to stumble through my doors was to be my rightful queen and you happen to be that person." Joseph explained

"What! NO! I refuse! You cannot do this!' I was cut short by Joseph hand covering my mouth lightly.

"I will not hurt you. But it has been decided and you cannot go back, just as I cannot go back. We are only separated by time, I have grown up in this palace… Do you want to know why you cannot go back?" Joseph asked coldly.

"yes" I said in a small voice.

"You cannot go back because you are dead. I bet you cannot remember what happened before your walk through the woods." I realised I couldn't remember and I burst out crying.

"You will be my queen Amelia. As it should have been."
