Prologue

August 1993-

The fourteen year old boy hugged the little girl, all the while glaring at the boy who had hurt her feelings.

"What did he say, Bella?" he questioned quietly.

"H-he…….m-my…mo-mother….." her words were choked out, through her tears. Jack felt anger churning inside, Bella's mother had abandoned her and her father years ago and Bella was sensitive to the subject. He wrapped an arm around her shoulders and silently led her from the cafeteria.

Jack stared at the form before him. He didn't want to go to college, he wanted to go to the police academy, but his father wouldn't hear of it.

He sighed and stood slowly. Why must he and his father always disagree?

A tap on the window interrupted his thoughts. He smiled; Bella was crouched on the low roof outside. Despite the four year age difference, they were best friends. They had grown up together, as had their fathers.

He slid open the window and helped Bella inside. His smile faded as he noticed her tear-streaked face, "What's wrong?"

"We're moving."

"You and your dad?" he asked eyes wide.

She nodded miserably.

"Where to?"

"Montana"

His jaw dropped, Montana?

She dropped down onto his bed and stared at the ceiling, "I don't want to go, but Daddy says I don't have a choice."

Present Day-

The large man took a seat on his side of the glass divider and picked up the phone. The small, muscular man opposite him smiled and lifted his phone, "I found her."

Rock nodded, "Where is she?"

"She's working on a small ranch in Montana, lives in a small cabin…"

"How old is she?"

"Just turned twenty-three."

Rock smiled.

"When do you get out?"

"Two weeks."

For a moment neither spoke. Rock stared into space, after being in prison for twenty years, being out would be wonderful, and even when he carried out his plans, he would not end up back here!
