Chapter One: The Princess and a Fork

Eira stared out the windowpane with pen in hand and notebook out on her desk. She sighed for the umpteeth time today. Ever since she had woken up (ever so late) at eleven, she had been thinking of a new short story for the newspaper. But she was having intense writer's block. She started to chew on her pen cap as she watched the cold crystal drops cascade down her window. She sighed once more and hit her head on the desk.

Someone decided to knock on her door at that exact moment. She called out, though her voice was directed at the floor, "Come in." The door clicked open and someone with really heavily armored boots walked in her room. Her acute ears could hear the dripping of water onto the hard wood floor in front of her door.

She recongized who it was from the sound of the boots, "Dammit, Cloud. The hell do you want?" He chuckled a little, "That bad of a writer's block?" She flicked him off as she slowly raised her head to stare out the window again. Cloud's chuckles only grew louder, "Alright, it's not writer's block. It's PMS." Now he had done it.

Eira turned around and jumped onto him, forcing them both down onto her evergreen carpet. She started throwing aimless punches at him in a blind fury of rage. He simply dodged them and smirked, "You know, maybe you should take up something more useful. Like knitting maybe..." Eira was thoroughly frustrated that he was pushing her buttons.

She kneeled him in the groin and stood up, panting heavily. He was in the fetal position on her floor. She blew her tussled curls out of her eyes before heading back towards her desk and blank notebook. Eira took up her pen and started to scribble a few words before ripping the pages out to get rid of her anger.

Cloud got up after a while of trying to recover from the pain in his... place. He bent over casually, staring at the blank paper. Suddenly, an idea came to mind as she stared out the window in a daze. He took her hand into his and started to move the pen across the paper. She was a bit startled but let Cloud lead her to a good idea.

When he was done, he waited for her reaction to the summary. Her eyes shone brightly in pleasure as she started to write the story he had given her. He smirked slightly and just waited for her to be finished. It was only about five minutes before she had finished. She handed him the notebook and waited for his approval.

Cloud read the beautiful cursive of his best friend, his eyes shining with amusement of her interpretion of his story idea. After a few minutes of reading it over, he handed it back and gave a slight nod. Eira grinned as she placed the notebook in her top desk drawer. She turned back around to face him and asked, "So, what do we have planned for today?"

Cloud took her hand and pulled her up, saying, "Well, Rain wants us to go see his band practice so I guess we could go..." He twirled her a little as she pushed him playfully away, shouting, "Tag, you're it!" She ran out the door and down the stairs. Cloud was about a foot behind her. She ran as fast as she could away from him so he couldn't tag her.

Suddenly, from behind, Eira felt herself being lifted from the ground and thrown over someone's shoulder. 'Damn that Cloud...' She thought grumpily as she banged her fists against his back, trying to make him put her down. He just chuckled at her playfulness and continued walking on towards Rain's house.

They arrived at Rain's house, receiving weird expressions from their friends. Eira muttered something along the lines of "That bastard won't ever leave me alone...". Cloud simply shrugged. They were escorted into the garage-like basement of Rain's house. All the instruments were set up and connected to the sound system with wires everywhere on the floor.

Eira sat in the black cushioned chair, her chest leaning against the back of it. Cloud just leaned his back against his, in a cool, bored manner. Eira rolled her eyes at his stubborn friend as Rain took up his black fender. Johnny-John clicked his drumsticks together for beat count as Matt slammed onto his neon green bass.

They started playing one of Eira's favorite songs: "Fork Road". She always loved the rhythm and beat of the song. And the lyrics made her heart pound esctatically. Rain started to sing, his handsome voice echoing off the neon red flame wallpaper of his walls.

Call to me in your sleep

Dreams of you plague my mind

As I rest in thoughts of keep

And for once, we're fine

And the howling wind picks up

And the cold air billows

And we go far and wide

And yet, your face is covered in droplets

Matt and Johnny-John joined in with him as they sang the chorus:

I want to cross your path

As we walk down this fork in the road

And as our fingers lace together

I want to hear...

Rain resumed once again on his own:

I listen for your breathing

Hot breath tickling my ear

As my fingers brush your heated cheeks

And we meet in tight embrace

But then, the howling wind picks up

And the cold air billows

And we go far and wide

Yet, I reach out to wipe away the shining crystals

The band members sang loudly, their voices bouncing out from the sound system:

I want to cross your path

As we walk down this fork in the road

And as our bodies press together

I want to see...

Rain took his solo part, strumming his guitar softly:

I watch for your moist lips

Tasting my bare skin sweetly

As I reached out for your silky strands

And we pull into passionate liplock

Yet, the howling wind picks up

And the cold air billows

And we go far and wide

But, I wipe away your tears of anguish

The band members joined voices once more:

I want to cross your path

As we walk down this fork in the road

And as our eyes lock everlasting

I want to say...

Rain gestured towards the bobbing Eira and sang:

I can't wait anymore

Are you just blind?

Every step you take

Has me mesmorized

Take me farther away

From the pain I'm enduring

Make me forget

What is always so alluring...

Eira started to sing by herself into the mic that Matt had passed her:

I'm standing here waiting

For your perfect embrace

Just standing here waiting

For your perfect taste

I wanted to say

Rain echoed:

I wanted to say

Eira continued:

That I will take the pain away

I will burn away the ice of your heart

I will melt away the sorrow

I will slowly

Ever so slowly

Waiting forever

Standing right here

For you

And I just want to say!

They sang together in perfect harmony, Eira going higher, Rain going lower:

I want to cross your path

As we walk down this fork in the road

And as our fingers lace together

I want to hear...

I want to cross your path

As we walk down this fork in the road

And as our bodies press together

I want to see...

I want to cross your path

As we walk down this fork in the road

And as our eyes lock everlasting

I want to say...

I love...

Rain whispered, "You." The music slowly faded as Cloud applauded at both his friends. Eira smiled and gave Cloud a hug. Cloud was caught off guard and looked a little uneasy. Rain smirked knowingly and gave a nod of approval, telling his aloof friend to make the next move. Cloud wrapped his strong muscular arms around the small of her back.

Eira pulled back suddenly and slapped him hard across the cheek. The band members gave sort of funny looks as she yelled at him, "That's for saying I was PMSing!" The band members bust out laughing. Cloud hung his head low and mumbled a apology that only she could hear. She smiled and gave him a forgiving kiss where she had slapped him.
